scampywiak: ...for consoles. Seriously, they are going about this console thing all wrong. Get about 10 members of the dev team to make a cheesy patriotic FPS where evil Russians invade the peaceful bliss of an American suburb. They'd sell millions. Console players would be like flies on shit to something like that. Lets face it, they're just expanding to consoles for financial reasons, right?
Yes, probably. But there's nothing wrong with companies trying to earn money. And this money could benefit the next game in the Witcher franchise in turn. So I say: Let them. Plus I hope they succeed.

Oh and btw, your remark about the military shooter...it's flawed in two ways:

1.) CD Project Red should not enter a genre they're not good in. At least not in the way you described it, like charging into it without care.

2.) The last try on a patriotic military shooter where the US of A were fighting a war for their homes, families and freedom against an all-evil sadistic enemy went so "good", that the developer went bankrupt. -.- I played the game, quality was generally good...it just didn't sell.
I think dnna is right, its all about marketing. They did a great job with TW2 promo videos. My older sister is a big fan of fantasy (she introduced me to Tolkien when I was 12) , she's an active member of the SCA but not a gamer. After I showed her TW2 promos awhile back she said "now that's a game I might actually try"

So a complex, mature, dark fantasy RPG could appeal to a lot of people. I'm not too familiar with the console market but I don't think there are many RPG's like The Witcher out there. Remember the console market is huge and does have a lot of gamers who are getting older and looking for something with more depth. LA Noir (which has a complex story, mature themes and little shooting) has been number 1 on the sales charts for 2 months-according to Gamespot:: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6323657/la-noire-duke-nukem-top-slumping-june-sales-npd

But Duke Nukem is #2 so I could be completely off base here...wouldn't be the first or last time :-P
L. A. Noirse has been advertised for a long time and it caught a lot of attention because of face capture technology. Duke Nukem has been in the making for so long that everyone wanted to see what the fuss is about - you have old fans, new fans, people looking for a casual shooter, young fanboys who want to see guns and chicks. Again, it's all about marketing and being as loud as you can be. The more people know about your product, the better. A good design (/presentation) is what sells (also see: Apple).

If you want a really stupid example, look at Lady Gaga: her last album is a bunch of 80s/90s songs remixed with her own old songs, but she advertised it as the second coming in the pop world. Is it a quality album? No. Did it sell well? Yes, because it was up in people's faces for months.

Time will tell if a product is quality or not, but the industry is cruel and it won't wait for anyone.
I see where scampywiak is coming from, but I agree with everyone arguing that console sales of TW2 are going to have a lot to do with marketing. Seekerpat's point about LA Noire is particularly apt. Catherine has also launched well in North America. There is a market for mature console rpgs if you can find the right way to tap into it. It never generates the mega-sales of a shooter because it's a bit of a niche, but games in that genre can still do well.

CDPR's shooter: Isn't "Hard Reset" being developed with help from CDPR as well as People Can Fly and others? Or is it just that people from other studios went over to Flying Wild Hog? Can't tell from the English-language news I read.

i think some devs have a philosophy if you want to do something, either do it good or don't do it at all.

making a shitty shooter certainly doesn't seem all that attractive.

Unless you just want to make some money. Capcom makes shitty games all the time, but their sincere efforts like SSF4, Bionic Commando, and Resident Evil, are genre defining classics.

Some people from CDPR went to FWH. CD Projekt is not directly associated, though the game looks pretty cool.

I honestly think that to sell a lot of copies on the console version, they just need to re-run the ads they made with emphasis that it's for Xbox360 now. Honestly, that marketing was really accessible. It caught the eye, had some great moments from the game, and gave you a general overview on what to expect. Sure, it didn't explain the full examples of game mechanics, but I hardly saw it necessary. Hook a potential buyer and they will find out the rest on their own.

No, it won't sell as much as PC, but not because consoles players are "mindless drooling idiots". It's because it came out on PC first, was made specifically for PC, and was marketed directly at PC gamers who want the best looking games and a long experience. Console players can handle as much complexity as the individual is able to process, just as PC gamers. That's not the issue here.

That makes a lot more sense. Thanks.

Ooh, ooh, I know: if they don't go back to "They," CDPR could make an ultra-realistic American Civil War shooter. It would be perfect for a game on a budget. The soldiers can only fire three aimed shots a minute anyway, and the battlefields get so smokey from the cannon fire that no one will be to see what they're aiming at, so there's less background to render. Hey, Silent Hill did it, and Yahtzee over at the Escapist likes to point out that the only enemies Americans hate more than Russians, Koreans, and everyone else on the planet is other Americans. ;)

scampywiak: I know you guys luv me :)

CDPR claims they will bring the most mature RPG to consoles...why? Because up till now, mature RPG's don't sell on consoles. It's like asking a 14 yr old to read Shakespeare.

They're gong about it all wrong.
I know alot of adult players who are looking forward to play TW2 on consoles.
If your company is already established in the minds of console gamers, you can make quick buck with mediocre shooter. Not the other way around.
Besides, aiming for a American market may backfire for foreigners, as Americans tend to get offended by most weird things. For example, I still cannot wrap my mind enough to see what exactly was so offensive in the sex cards from the first Witcher. I guess, developers might have been equally baffled by that reaction...

Morality has money backing it, here. I'm just waiting for the day when we're mandated by law to wear clothes when we engage in the "horizontal pole vault," if you catch my drift. You know, the good ol' "corridor shooter"?

I'm confused by the plurality of "some" in your sentence. I count one company that has that philosophy.
In America, they are lots of committee served for specific purpose, for example the world famous PMRC. If you're 'lucky', one of those committee will get offended by your product.

Then they could focus on their real game: TW2 for PC.

What do you guys think?
That has already been done..........sort of. In Fallout 3 you do have an instance where the Chinese invade the U.S. ( Alaska ) . It is the DLC: Operation Anchorage. There is another instance within the main game, where you have to rescue your father and the Chinese invade.

scampywiak: TW2 will not be a major, money-making hit on consoles. Console players aren't interested in what it has to offer; they won't even understand it.
avatar
dnna: So you come from the future?

I can giggle at occasional console bash, but let's get real: not all console players are dumb 12 year olds. The game CAN be successful if they advertise it right, which I'm sure they will. Hell, they even got the TW1 cutscene guy to do stuff for the upcoming X360 release.

All you need is explosions, dragons and cool graphics and people will buy.
Thank You. : ) I am not a dumb 12 year old by a long shot. I have both a PS2 and PS3 and enjoy both. I do prefer playing Tomb Raider, for one, on them because of the control factor ( I prefer the Joy stick over the mouse as far as movement goes ). I know I can use a game pad / controller on the PC, but too lazy to mess with it. : ) There are a lot that I know that never had enough computer to play TW1 and was looking forward to the Console release that got shelved. Looks like they finally get their chaqnce with TW2.
CDPR is wasting their time with the 360. Console RPGers are a group of people who think Fable 3 and Dragon Age 2 are the greatest RPGs ever. They won't play a game like The Witcher where you have to think about your choices and actually listen to conversations.
