Patch!!
It's indeed crazy.

I uninstalled it and am going to wait until they add the grid mode (which is equally crazy it wasn't incldued from the beginning).
You're overexaggerating, the payload is only 26 GB. :D

My guess is that they simply had to redistribute a bunch of the resource files for whatever reason. This is probably not adding additional GBs to the storage requirements post-install, rather mostly just replacing existing large binary files like sound clips, textures, graphical assets, etc.

Yes, that's ridiculous (for reference patch size on steam was 7.1Gb).

As much as I'm liking them I think I'll just send both BTIV and pathfinder (buggy messes both) to the backlog for now and play Kingdom Come Deliverance instead (which of course was also bugged to hell when released, I hope most issues are fixed by now).
Yep not downloading this as i have a monthly cap

I have finished the game and did love every minute of it so i dont need this patch anyway
Please GOG can you somehow make the patches smaller?

P.S Vote firewatch !

I thought these 26/27 GB patches were a glitch, so I came to the forums only to find out they aren't. Unlike you, I have unltd internet but my internet is sloooooooooowwwwwwwwww. These patches take about a day to download for me.

Read the forum. It is not the fault of GOG but of inXile.

The patches are compressed, cause the patch modifies vast majority of the game that it ends up being 50+ GB of replaced files. So for GoG to make them smaller they need to create a system just like Steam's Pipeline, but without possibly breaking any copyright laws. Steam's system is a genius idea but I believe they have it copyrighted, so either GoG would need to license it from Steam, which I doubt Valve would do that, or GoG would need to come up with a different method that doesn't resemble Steam's method. So yeah, not something that is easy to do.

But there's no point asking GOG to make patches smaller. GOG only puts out what they are given.

Yep, I get ya, there was no harm in asking I will refrain from posting before reading the forum in the future. Again I apologise

P.S I did ask Brian Fargo on twitter about patch size and he replied

*I’ll send this to my guys but it should not be*

There was nothing wrong with your question and certainly nothing to apologise for.

Unfortunately there are just some devs who just don't seem bothered to create smaller patches for GOG for whatever reason.

Developers don't make patches, all they do is upload a new build to GoG, and then GoG sends to its customers any changed files in a compressed format. They dont makes patches for Steam either, they just upload a new build and Steam pipeline takes care of the rest.

Now days developers don't make patches, they simply upload a new build to the platform and that platform does everything else

But this is the second time I've had to download a 20+GB update.

Either they're completing trashing the whole game every update in favor of a completely new game, or the game is now 3x bigger than the original download.

Either way it's ridiculous.

I imagine something similar could be achieved using some kind of intelligent block-level syncing mechanism (along the lines of rsync). I doubt it's licensing related. More likely this has simply been considered somewhat of an edge case; a low priority issue that hasn't needed fixing until _maybe_ as of late. I'm sure as games continue to get larger and updates like this more frequent, they will eventually have to do something. They may already be working on it as far as we know.

On the other hand, maybe they already have a way that InXile isn't using yet. Or maybe they truly had to re-encode all the sound bytes and there was no way around it. Who knows. I assume the developers are doing the best they can to address all the issues and optimize performance.

The only reason anyone is upset over this is because the game is so awesome, that players are struggling to keep their patience in check and are frothing at the mouth for any and all updates. :)
