miff777: Yep not downloading this as i have a monthly cap
I have finished the game and did love every minute of it so i dont need this patch anyway
Please GOG can you somehow make the patches smaller?
P.S Vote firewatch !
eisberg77: The patches are compressed, cause the patch modifies vast majority of the game that it ends up being 50+ GB of replaced files. So for GoG to make them smaller they need to create a system just like Steam's Pipeline, but without possibly breaking any copyright laws. Steam's system is a genius idea but I believe they have it copyrighted, so either GoG would need to license it from Steam, which I doubt Valve would do that, or GoG would need to come up with a different method that doesn't resemble Steam's method. So yeah, not something that is easy to do.
I imagine something similar could be achieved using some kind of intelligent block-level syncing mechanism (along the lines of rsync). I doubt it's licensing related. More likely this has simply been considered somewhat of an edge case; a low priority issue that hasn't needed fixing until _maybe_ as of late. I'm sure as games continue to get larger and updates like this more frequent, they will eventually have to do something. They may already be working on it as far as we know.
On the other hand, maybe they already have a way that InXile isn't using yet. Or maybe they truly had to re-encode all the sound bytes and there was no way around it. Who knows. I assume the developers are doing the best they can to address all the issues and optimize performance.
The only reason anyone is upset over this is because the game is so awesome, that players are struggling to keep their patience in check and are frothing at the mouth for any and all updates. :)
