I distinctly remember when I used to play the collector's edition way back when that I could roll while pulling up/pushing into a dive, which was great for strafing, dodging fire and just generally feeling cool.

However, when I hold the "roll" button on my joystick, (alt-3 on keyboard, weirdly), pulling left and right on the stick rolls the craft, but pulling back/pushing up changes the throttle level, rather than the pitch. This makes rolling while pulling back/pushing up impossible, and really makes flying the craft a lot less enjoyable than I remember.

Any ideas how to change this would be greatly appreciated. Maybe there's a key on the keyboard I can hold instead (although I've seen no likely candidate in the keyboard command list).

I'm using a PXN-2103 joystick, which seems to be working pretty well apart from this.

The good news is that it's not your joystick that's the problem.

The bad news is that all DOS versions of these games have this limitation and for the question why, only the programmers know I'm afraid.

On the positive side, I found rolling isn't really needed anywhere except in the provinggrounds.
i assume people are mixing this up with xwing. i just checked all 3 versions, all show the same behaviour, throttle up/down, its even in the game manual.

Thanks for the quick responses... it's completely possible that I'm mixing up the two games... but I thought I remembered using the roll while pitching to do some fancy-looking dodging while flying head-on into fire in a shieldless TIE - oh well, the vagaries of memory.

You can do corkscrewst in the Windows versions while holding the roll button.

Yeah this absolutely flummuxed me when I first played Tie Fighter.

I mean, the strategy guide for X-Wing had previously drilled the 'Wotan Weave' into my gradeschooler's head, a maneuver which was just a corkscrew done by pitching and rolling.

Then here's Tie Fighter asking me to fly ships without shields where a Weave might be extremely useful....except I can't do it!

Really makes roll into an almost aesthetic feature like, oo that Star Destroyer is upside down...better roll it the right way up...since without combination with pitch its a pretty useless maneuver.

I thought the 98 version on Gog,com was the windows version....it's not letting me corkscrew.

It is and I can totally do it. I'll post a video on youtube later if I get a chance.

Good to know it's possible... do you know if it's something to do with different joysticks? Or was there something you changed in the setup?

you"re not using joystick button 2 to do it, do you? what buttons are you using, explain to us! NAO!

just kidding, please explain exactly how you do it.
I can demonstrate it in a video when I get home, but here's basically how it works...

See the button where your thumb goes on that joystick? I have that mapped to the Target in sights/Roll button. If I press and hold that button, all of a sudden I can roll with the X axis, and still pitch up/down with the Y axis. So I can corkscrew while holding that button
On my joystick, if I press and hold the Target in sights/Roll button and try to pitch up/down with the Y axis it actually controls the Thrusters. This behavior matches what is mentioned in the manual.
Only in X-Wing it works as expected.

Yep - same with me. I'm sure I could corkscrew back in the old days. Maybe it is a hardware bizarre hardware thing.
i dont get it, people are saying the can do a corkscrew by using the roll button but its IN THE FRIGGIN MANUAL that using button 2 plus forward/backwards does indeed accelerate/reduce speed.

HOW?
You know what guys, I'm currently playing through X-Wing so that's what I was talking about. I wasn't aware that Tie Fighter's roll button behaves differently.
