I remember Speedball and the sequel, but I also remember the PC controls were a pain (especially in the sequel). Can someone tell me how the controls work in this version. Is it smooth and easy? This the probably the main thing which either prevent me from buying, or make me buy.
You can define the controls by yourself as you wish, but I use a XBox 360 controler which is more comfortable for that type of game.

Sotaria: I remember Speedball and the sequel, but I also remember the PC controls were a pain (especially in the sequel).
The two-player controls in the DOS version were iffy due to PC/DOS itself, ie. PC didn't really support connecting two joysticks on the same PC. I think Gravis or something made some special controller which had two gamepads connected to the same port, not sure if it worked with the DOS version.

Anyway, I recall the (joystick) controls were fine for single-player, and I recall playing the DOS version a lot with my brother, me using the keyboard and him the joystick. :)

Anyway, I wouldn't expect those DOS era PC hardware limitations to be present in this new HD version (confirmed by Silverhawk).

And even if you were playing the DOS version in DOSBox today, I presume mapping the keyboard controls to another gamepad works too, allowing two people to play the DOS version with two gamepads. Ah, progress...

Agreed.

I never played the original DOS game against a human player but, other than sore thumbs, I don't recall having any problems playing with a Gravis gamepad pretty much out of the box.

How do you do that? All I see are 2 predefined keyboard layouts (cursor keys + enter or wasd + space). I haven't seen an option which let me define keys on my own.

Does someone happen to know where the settings are stored?

Click on the predefined keys, for example in keyboard layout 1 on the up arrow. Then you can define a new button.
Speaking of controls I find this HD version embarassing and below the standard of 20 years old games. It's unbelievable how bad you could make game that was really cool back then.
SP2 was straightforward, few controls, responsive and intuitive even in the inferior DOS version.
The controls in this HD version are useless. Using keyboard the menu is really hard to navigate. UI doesn't suggest you the right way to interact, for instance the gym/upgrade page where the cursor "fly" even if you barely move it. It also disappear and however the way it show it has selected something it's really unclear. It's impossible to choose the team flag. It's really hard to understand how to select and act. In the old DOS version you did all that was needed with 4 direction and 1 button and without useless ui navigation. How come this version is so wrong that I find hard to believe that was licensed by the same guy who created the game?
I'm really looking forward for the release of the original game on GOG, that should be preserved anyways.
Than maybe someday the remake will be fixed looking back 20 years to see how it is done.

Maybe it could work with a controller, but right now to me this HD version seems more like a mobile version enhanced to be released on pc.
Hi look at this one .

As for navigating the menues and such it would be wise to remember that the original wasn't perfect either. The thing that disturbs me with this one is that while they've tried to make it more straightforward it's obviously designed for a mouse - while the rest of the game is designed for a gamepad.
I'm having no trouble at all navigating through with a gamepad...maybe you didn't see the buttons are highlighted ? x)

It was more straightforward then this one anyway. The ui seems designed o recicled from a mobile ui to me.
With a keyboard it's so imprecise that it is almost impossible to do anything. Also there's probably a bug because some menu aren't highlighted or cease to me after some combination. To me upgrade/gym is unusable while I could do anything with the original game.

I'm not saying that it's impossible to navigate with a gamepad, only that it responds badly. As for keyboard I haven't even tried since games like these never works as well with keyboard. I can agree to a certain degree that it seems to be derived from a touchscreen interface, that's why I revert to using the mouse during the menues and that alone works more or less flawless.

The original was straightforward in that it responded well to every button press. However, it was not an intuitive UI, while this version is i little bit better in that regard.

Still I find it a lot harder and time consuming when managing the team. I don't want to say that the old one was perfect, but that was 25 years ago. What's the excuse now?
Also, responding well to every button shouldn't be a hard to achieve feature.

My point is that it wasn't a good solution 25 years ago, but this seems to be a stepp in right direction. One thing they need to address is that it needs to respond well to every button press.

It's not only a matter of responsiveness, but also visual feedback. My point was that a 25 years old solution was still most viable than this and at least I could do what I want with little effort and clear feedback.
With this UI and issue the game clearly shouldn't have come out yet.
