Morel: Hey All

Yeah - I'm from the dev team ;)

So - the Linux version is now live.

I hope you guys will like it!

Best and Merry Christmas!

Loger13: Hello!
Any plans to add coop by LAN / Direct Connection? It will allow both online coop and cross-store coop simultaneously.
Hey!

Maybe next year - at the moment we need to publish the game at every platform (PC and consoles), so this is the priority.
But we would like to do online co-op a well!

Thanks a lot! In the GOG game tailer it shows GOG galaxy in the end. Since Galaxy ist not available for Linux and other games already required Galaxy for online multiplayer, can you confirm Shing online multiplayer works for Linux?

JMB9: Well, after a lot work leading to nothing I am a little bit tired trying to improve the Linux situation on GOG.

I think if a share of the excessive marketing for Cyberpunk 2077 (and I don't think a comment of the technical
side is needed) would have been put into Linux support (e.g. improving webpages, getting new developers,
start official Ubuntu 20.04 Focal support - cough ...) it would be better concerning the Linux users.

I got the impression that while GOG did a lot to get Linux ports in former times this is no longer the case.

Currently I am collecting ... and do have much more points than would be reasonable to mention to GOG support:
more like an avalanche.
I got several times remarks from GOG about future work (e.g. getting working version of broken Linux port - still
advertised as being available for Linux - still broken - or putting my points to the Linux team etc. - without any reply).
Most developers are much more open than GOG is to a direct customer.
Trying to get some nice Linux games (accompanied by other supported platforms not that important ;)
I got feedback about a high hurdle to get on GOG to having been told by GOG that their game "is for
the non-GOG audience" - a game which I would also instantly buy. Reading this was like an explosion.
Nice to know that I am not part of the GOG audience ... maybe they should clarify that point somewhere ...
and maybe they know thereafter that they got a very wrong impression of "their audience", which had been
people wanting good games and play it for tens of years - not people wanting photorealistic games which may
work for a short time - after a long time of bug fixing - if supporting standards not available on release date.
Games without heart and soul - after my taste. Ok, I said such comments are not necessary ... but ...

Concerning this thread: I wrote a mail to developers about Shing! directly which would have been an instant buy for me ...
but did not get an answer - but this statement above rise hope a little - and maybe my mail was received.

But concerning GOG I have to come to the impression that I am not welcome as using Linux only and wish for
high quality games - and even try to help which is also not welcome (I am not interested in words, but corrected
websites, corrected start scripts, GOG contacting developers - which seems to be the gamers' part ...).
And I am no longer sure if it would be good thing to see developers here on GOG if they are treated similar to what
I have experienced till that day.

And this 4 digit login terror pseudo-security mechanisms is more than annoying ... with more than 15 minuted till a mail arrives
(in seldom cases - but it is enerving even if it comes after ~30 s).
So I don't think the current direction is positive for technical people.
I still hope for a change - as GOG should see that what they are doing may not be in the best interest of their customers.
But maybe this does not count at all ...

As said ... I am tired.
I understand you but this is not the right thread to discuss this.

Thanks for the Linux version on GOG - as said I purchased your game and shortly played it with a friend.
Everything seems to be smooth and controls are really good.
Happy new year!

Enginnsson: I understand you but this is not the right thread to discuss this.
I know - but there is no 'right thread' - no right addressee - but when support is not the right place - things should go to Linux team etc.: no answer - and things are not corrected - and this was one game in a long line of games with said Linux ports available (from developers/publishers) and no mention on the GOG product page.
And I have already written in another case to get clear info from developers.
This case the Linux port came a little later - which is OK for me - but I am not pleased that no info is given by GOG: at least a "Linux version is planned shortly after release" would be nice - and it is GOG's duty to provide those information.
The developer reacted - and this was nice - but we are buying on GOG in should rely in the info GOG gives - and this is in many cases just not sufficient.
I think once in a while one should say what one experiences - and it is just a reminder for GOG that they say that gamers should feel at home here - and it is not clearly said "Windows gamers".
Additionally I am not the only one ... and from my point of view it would not need that much to improve the situation so that also Linux gamers can feel at ease - even though not quite at home.
But the next case for the support matures ... and would be nice if at least a little bit will improve after all the energy put into that endeavor.
And these are all technical things - not opinions - so seems to be appropriate in the forum (not reasonable in reviews).
But yes - not in that way! Will keep it shorter next time. ;)
Hi All

No - online multiplayer does not work for Linux. It doesn't work for any platform ;)
GOG Galaxy integration is just something we did for all platforms for now, but online multiplayer is not available at the moment (the only 2 options to play online multi is: Steam Remote play and Nvidia Geforce NOW.

As I wrote earlier - we would like to do a full multiplayer, but this is something we will be working on later.

Wasting time, IMO. As I said, domething like multiplayer over LAN or Direct Connection would be better: it would work between versions purchased in different stores and the implementation for you (as a developer) would be universal - add it to the PC version once and it will work in all stores (no store-specific code or API).
Unfortunately, nowadays this is not a popular option among developers, although in games of this genre (on a PC) in ye good old days it was ubiquitous.

This is great for games that work as a service. Using Steam or GoG APIs for online multiplayer is cost optimal, no servers, no matchmaking code etc. Games like Shing! are zombies in terms of online functionality because they do not generate revenue that would pay for server related costs.

Also for a small indie team using a ready to ship solution is a no brainer. Writing netcode is a challenge itself, creating matchmaking etc. from scratch would be a killer task.

As I see it - stable, platform based online play is better than no online play :)

@Morel Sorry for the OT, but here I've got the oportunity to ask a developer: I'm concerned about Unity Analitics (I simply dislike telemetry: it's somewhat of a prejudice sometimes but I want to relax about it -i.e. not having it).
There's been some flame about Analytics being used in the game. Is it still so for GOG version? Can at least be opted out?
Thx
