I absolutely love this game..have not had this much fun in a loooong time! Pillars is totally absorbing! BUT......I am at level 7 now..still a long way to go in the game and I am getting the feeling I also may run out of ways to advance my character once I hit the cap with plenty more content to explore. I wonder what others experiences are.
Well, let's face it, having only 12 levels, makes it important to think during every level up. That can be a good thing.

In my first playthrough I didn't know 12 was the cap and I didn't distribute all kinds of points. I would have skilled it differently, but everything is better in the second playthrough, right? ;)

Not the exceedingly repetitive fights.
Switch your party members and you'll have more people to level up. All those stronghold adventures are not enough.

I had all party member at level 12 like 10 hours before I was done with the game. :D

Me too. I wonder about this choice they made, why not make it something bigger like 15 or so, to stop from getting to top lvl too much time before finishing the game.

The way I see it, that's a decision you always have to make in a game like this. The game must be completable by people who don't play all the optional quests and yet people who complete everything shouldn't be so overpowered that nothing can threaten them anymore. Capping it like this is the best compromise two serve both these masters.
There is a mod on the nexus that raises it to 15, for people who want that

I actually don't agree with that, I firmly believe if you spend much more time than average building your character to make him stronger and better equipped, you should be able to show it by the end game. Of course, I'm not saying lvl cap = lvl 20, but something like 15, wouldn't be THAT much stronger that is gamebreaking, while at the same time it would be an improvement over those who reached 8-10 by just focusion on the main campaing and few side quests and no endless path done, for example.

I feel, having reached the lvl cap while having an entire act ( III ) and a whole LOT of side quests yet to finish, that my character was simply not allowed to level up just because, and it's not a great feeling, myself being a guy who likes to complete most if not all quests available for me I feel a lot of work just didn't translate into improvement for my character. In the end I just skipped Tier 2 and up for the bounties quest from the Fortress, cause I already had a bunch of side quests to finish before going to the end of the main quests and I had reached lvl 12 like 5 hs before. Nothing to gain, after all.

Of course, that's just my opinion and everyone's entitled to their own, but yeah, that's mine.
Just removing the level cap isn't a good option, it'll make the end game too easy.

There are only two viable paths IMHO :

1. Make it slower to level up (award less XP or make each level require more XP) so you'll reach level 12 nearly at the end of the game.

2. Up the level cap but also up the enemies at the end of the game.

But you are! The final boss was a joke after "the master below".

Also, there are more ways to improve the character than just leveling. The quests will still give you better equipment and you can start to enchant everything. :P Especially the bounty quests almost always give unique items not available anywhere else.

I also don't agree with this. It's just my opinion, but it makes me think of the old 16 bit console jRPG's like FF3 - I grinded like hell in those games - for hours - just to be sure my party was so strong they could wipe the floor with the final boss. That was a good feeling, having all the time I spent grinding pay off in an ass-whoopin at the finale. I guess everyone has their own way they like to play, and play the way that satisfies them. Sure, a tough battle that you need to reload a bunch of times til you finally win is very satisfying - but to me, so is prepping my characters and going the extra mile to power them to the point that I can destroy the boss on my first try - because of the work I put in to be able to.

My favorite mod in the Bethesda games was always ones to slow down leveling. I don't like gaining a level each hour I play and really like having the time to see what each level is like and learn what's new and changed.

Mine, for the Elder Scrolls games, was the XP mod.

It changed the game from getting xp in certain skills by using them repeatedly, to that having no effect and instead getting xp only from completing quests, opening locks, etc - much like these older style crpg's. The level up screen was different too, you got a certain amount of points to spend and put wherever you wanted your pc to improve (again, like the older crpg's).

It also had the added effect of making leveling much slower.
