It did work! I had to fuss with some router/firewall settings to let the game communicate, and I couldn't tell you now exactly what I did, except that I read over the tutorials on the Comodo site and some general information on VPNs until I finally got it right but now it is working like a charm and I've found that the lag experienced on many game servers is hardly an issue with the VPN. I wish I could give clear instructions but I'm not sure exactly what I did. I used port forwarding on my router to send data on ports used by Unite directly to my PC. If you want to try playing PM me and join my network, "rawlan." (No password, leave it blank.) You should be able to chat over the network regardless and if you are having issues getting the game to see the network, as I did initially, we can at least troubleshoot it from there. Perhaps we can even construct a tutorial for others who want to set it up.
I also tried playing Sacrifice, which was the smoothest running multiplayer game I think I'd ever seen, indistinguishable from running it single player. I also have GOG games like Spellforce, the Earth Series, and I am sure others which suffer from poorly supported or no longer existing online servers and only offer LAN multiplayer.
I'd love to try them out too if you are interested.
