I've never played this game but I'm intrigued. Is it worth getting?

Most people here are people who like the game so take our advice with a grain of salt: YES, of course you should buy it, it's a GREAT game! :D

That's a good idea... Outcast really is not like any other game I've played before. I think it's fantastic, but it might not be to everyone's taste.

The graphics are very unusual... I thought they looked really cool, but they are very low-res. There is a fan patch to increase the resolution (check the sticky thread) but this does not affect the size of the voxels so the terrain may not look much better. But I think the original looks really good anyway. Don't be dissuaded by graphics in the videos you see.

The best thing about the game for me is how real the world feels. The game has an amazing atmosphere. Also good voice acting and an interesting plot.

Oh also the backstory for the game is in the manual, but not in the game itself. So it's worth reading that first. Comes with the GOG copy in PDF format. The backstory is not all that imaginative but the actual game plot gets much more interesting.

lol nope!

i didn't like it at all.
Honestly, I think Outcast is not only one of the best games in the GOG library but one of the best games ever.

The graphics take a little to get used to but other than that, I truly believe that it's one of the best games the PC platform has to offer.

Patryn: The graphics take a little to get used to
That's debatable. :) I personally find the graphics stunning, considering the year. There are games that came in the early 2000s that still didn't look as good.

The graphics (read, technology) are obviously dated, but they are very well used in this game. The aesthetics (read, artistic design) make the game look very good, imo.
And don't forget the amazing soundtrack! So, so good!

not that anyone was begging me to be a disagreeable troll...but!

--i didn't like the graphics. Screenshots are stunning, but animations are terrible. Your character runs like a pansy. I feel like I should be listening to "Having a Wonderful Time" whenever he runs.

--i didn't like the plot. i loved Avatar, but this dumbs down the whole "White Man Helps Primitives" cliche to the point that I couldn't even meet it halfway.

Have we played the same game and watched the same movie? "Avatar" while undoubtedly a technical masterpiece has a very cliched (and even illogical and downright dumb at times) story while to story about the Talans is rich and has an entirely different premiss.

And to address both you and diegopmc: Personally, I think the graphics of Outcast are outstanding, I just think that someone, who never has seen voxel graphics - or plain simple wasn't a gamers back then - will need a little time to getting used to them.

I agree that some animations may look a little strange or even awkward but most of them are really well done.

If you consider how old that game actually is, it is somewhat of a technical marvel. The game uses effects that hardware accelerated 3D engines implemented years later.
Once you're sucked into the game you will experience stunning vistas and a world that's truly alive.
