Kank: I grew up in southern New Jersey (that's why I'm interested in this game) and I never heard any stories about the KKK operating anywhere in New Jersey. The mob was the main thing in Jersey even long after the 20's. I just talked to my dad who is now 90 years old (born in '22) and he said he never heard anything about the KKK in Jersey. Granted, there were a lot of racial bigots even when I was growing up but nothing organized as far as we know.

JudasIscariot: It could be something to do with historical liberties taken by the devs and my woefully incomplete knowledge concerning the Prohibition. I do recall that it wasn't nationwide at first until Jan. 17, 1920.

The only reason I mentioned the KKK at all was due to this propaganda poster: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/47/Defender18thkkk.jpg.
No doubt the KKK was influential in Prohibition. And I can see why the devs thought to include them in the game. After all it adds another historical theme to spice up the game, although I wouldn't care for it. But the mob was a big force in Jersey and they profitted greatly from Prohibition.
Anybody else already played the demo? What are your thoughts?
I played the demo, and felt there was a lot missing but then again it IS a demo. What was there I found entertaining, and it seemed up my alley. I can't wait to see what is in the full game.

It's got the Simcity pacing (not obliged to click like a madman) that I love, XCOM-style turn based battles with wildly different attacks depending on the equipped weapons, henchmen with unique powers, and it's got gangsters.

There are also some hidden nooks and crannies to explore in the demo, which will probably get you killed.

Yeah, my kinda game, so yeah, top.
Okay, I played the demo, too.

I enjoyed the strategy part in the city map a lot more than the "tactical" shooting parts. I don't think there is much in there that can be called tactical, except that it is a small map.

I also don't get why so many people compare the game to X-Com. Sure, it has got a strategy and a combat part, but unlike in X-Com, the strategy part seems to have no influence on the combat part.

Other than these points I enjoyed the demo a lot, there is much you can do to develop your "company". Still, I fear that the gameplay will become repetitive very fast since there doesn't seem to be much you can do with the money you earn except buy more businesses.

I'll wait for the reviews, and if there are parts of the game outside of the demo's timeframe that will alleviate these points I'll buy it, otherwise I'll pick it up when it is on sale.
As for the tactical combat:

Movement points and action points are separate. You can run up to a guy and unload as many shots into him as you could if you remained still. There are some higher level perks that give bonuses for firing without moving.

Taking an action immediately zeroes out your movement points. If you use half your movement points to go around a corner and shoot a guy, you can't use the rest to retreat.

No interrupt fire. Perhaps this becomes a perk later on?

Cover and line of sight are screwy. It seems cover is less like a physical obstruction as in Silent Storm and more like an abstract to-hit percentage modifier.

You can't tell units to look in a certain direction.

Feels more like D&D combat than X-Com (the original, anyway).
Purchased last night and downloaded the demo.

Looks OK nice graphics gameplay looks straight forward easy to learn. I like very easy to learn hard to master.

The only thing I noticed that I would like to see patched in later on is mouse wheel zoom to the cursor. Zooming into just the centre of the map is way out dated. After sins of a solar Empire made this mainstream it is a feature I really want in strategy games.

Cheers

MarkL

EDIT
Tried the Graviteam game Operation Star a little while ago, and gave up very quickly. Glad it was on special.
Looks OK but the execution and UI are hopeless. This was the opposite of what I like in a game. In this example the game is the interface, far too much trouble for me when there are games like this around where you can get straight into it.

Frankly, shortly after trying this out I have to say I'm completely bored with the game. The non-combat parts are so-so; a bit clunky gameplay, nothing terribly interesting. But the combat is very clumsily executed, and I found myself repeatedly getting into fights that go bad not because of bad decisions I made, but because of clumsy interface, horrible cover system that isn't all that useful, and pretty unintuitive and clumsy game mechanics. Add to that the fact you can't save mid-mission but can only restart it, and you'll find yourself repeatedly restarting the same mission over and over because you can't seem to get used to the clumsy combat system.

I'm just not feeling it with this game and I'm sorry I spent any money on it. Someone commented before it came out that it'll be "X-Com with gangsters"; after trying it I can only say I wish that were true. X-Com is a far better game, and I wish the developers took some cues from it. I'm not saying copy it's game mechanics, but at least take a look at how one successful system works, maybe come up with ways to improve on it. This feels like a game that was mediocre 10 years ago, and someone just released a graphics revamp mod for it.

I can see your points and too a large extent I agree as well, but to me they are only minor irritations. For me the only game breaker is the lack of save options mid mission. I can turn a blind eye to the rest. If it was made by the same people who made Tropico it certainly lacks the polish of that game.

I see a lot of promise with this game, but at this stage I will hold off playing and hope that in mission saves are implemented. I am suprised about the lack of saves mid mission as so many games not having this have sold so badly.

Not sorry I purchased it, just like Skyrim wait for the patches.

Cheers Markl
Wasn't this going to be 2.2GB? It's only 999MB, where did the missing 1.2GB go? Future DLC? I hope not

Gangster 3 on Tropic 4 Engine. Phooey. Not much work to do to facelift a low game like Gangsters 1 and 2 and put it on someone else's graphically appealing engine. Its still Gangsters no matter what they call it. Like POTC was actually supposed to be Sea Dogs 2.
I am just glad that i waited till this game was tested.
ATM it sounds like a waste of money.

Yeap, it's probably wise to wait on further information about upcoming DLCs and a decent sale for all of them including the game.

I pre-ordered the game, only because it's on gog, totally waste of money.

Wait until it's under 10 bucks, but I would still not buy it anyway or you're better off playing a facebook game, it's free minus the microtransaction. That's how bad it is.
I pre ordered also, I thought GOG would only carry a good new game.
My fault I know, but this game leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
Hope DLC improve this game, or it can be modded.
