BreathingMeat: Ugh. Unlocking content through Uplay bollocks? That's even worse!
It's such a shame. I loved the old MM games. This could have been such a good thing.
Oh well, if Ubisoft want my money, they know what they need to do.
To be fair, the content unlocked through Uplay "rewards" isn't really all that significant. It's a Wallpaper, some slightly overpowered magic items that will make the beginning of the game slightly easier if you have characters able to take advantage of them, a NPC hireling who can cast a handful of buff spells at the lowest level once a day (semi-useless past the second act of the game) and a dungeon that I cannot yet comment on. Not necessary by any means, and I imagine they would just be included in a hypothetical GOG version.
The game itself is pretty good, I say that as someone who beat World of Xeen last year. However, it also has a fair share of technical issues, so maybe waiting 50 years for Ubisoft to not release games on Uplay is the right way to go, since they'll probably be fixed by then.
