I can't hear any sound and I didn't find any options to make change this.
Is ScummVM responsible for that? Can't Configure ScummVM neither.
Why can't it simply use the Digital HDMI Exit of my GFX card like any other game I use?

Maybe the game's resolution isn't properly supported and that causes problems with the HDMI output. Try switching to windowed mode (Alt-F5; if that doesn't work, find a file called "loom.ini" in the game's folder and edit the "fullscreen" setting to "false") and see if you get the sound.

Hi.. I also cannot get the sound to cooperate. I tried windowed mode, but that did not work. I looked for the "loom.ini" file but did not find it. I looked in the GOG folder, as well as the SCUMM folder. Maybe I am just looking past it?

Thank you in advance for any suggestion you may have. :-)

loom.ini should be in whatever path was entered during the game installation (on Windows, if you have a shortcut, do the right-click -> "Open file location", then go one folder level up and look there).
You may try the following:
1) Start ScummVM.exe in the folder \Loom\ScummVM
2) Add the game by browsing to the folder \Loom
3) Set audio and other options to your liking and see if that gets the sound to work It's probabply easier then to fiddle with the ini file.
Hi,

I'm having the same problem with Loom. The music tracks that were in audio from the cd version play fine but the rest of the tracks are completely silent. Any help to fix that?? :(

Cheers,

Maybe I misunderstand the question, but as far as I know the only sound in the CD version of Loom is what was on the audio track of CD. (A single, long track that the game would play short pieces of.) It didn't play any background music besides that, probably because as soon as there was any other sound (e.g. a character speaking, or using the distaff) the music would have had to be stopped.

I don't think this method of implementing speech was very common, but I guess talkie games were still in their infancy. Personally I've only seen it in Loom and Chronicles of the Sword, where the latter used the additional trick of putting half of the voices in the left audio channel and the other half in the right one, doubling the amount of speech it could fit into one disc. (But if you tried to play it in a CD player, you would hear two voices talking at the same time.)

I believe the first LucasArts adventure to have almost non-stop music was Monkey Island 2.

Hi and thanks for the reply!! :)

You're right and that is probably it, because I owned Loom both in 3 1/2 disks and, when cd-rom players came out,it came with Loom in CD as bonus. Even I played and still own the CD talkie version I obviously remember more the disk version since it was the one I used to play more.

It's a shame then though, I miss the music parts like when Bobbin wakes up, he gets all that "wake up son of cygna" dialogue and afterwards, music keeps sounding till you go see the Elders. In my case, if you skip the track that's it, absolute silence. Or when you get to the glass maker guilt and you get that whole panoramic of the green buildings you used to have music too which I don't get with this talkie version. That's mainly why I asked, since I remembered the parts with music and I was sad that it was all silent except for the few dialogues that pop up from time.

Anyways, thanks a lot for the help, this way I'll stop tweaking ScummVM's settings hehe. :P Let's hope GOG will add the disk version one day and the FM-Towns one, I'd love replaying Loom getting the best experience.

Thanks again!

Thank you so very much for taking the time to reply to me. I didn't realize I had another response to my query until I happened to look today for any further suggestions.

Unfortunately, nothing that has been suggested so far has unlocked the sound for Loom. I have Windows 8.1 and I have tried the suggestions listed here, but no sound.

Any other ideas? My son gave me this game - it's one we played together when he was young so it's just a trip down memory lane for me. :-) He keeps asking if I managed to make it work, and so far, I haven't.

Thank you for any suggestions you have and for taking the time to reply to me in the first place. :-)

Unfortunately no ideas left. As it was said before the game only has very little music but you still should hear the speech of the characters and at least the title song. The only option I could give you is to reinstall your sound card drivers and try to find a newer one. Other than this you can only open a support ticket. Unfortunately I don't have Win8 so I cannot test it myself. Have you already tried the several sound options in ScummVM itself?

Thanks! This solved my sound issues.
