Maybe I misunderstand the question, but as far as I know the only sound in the CD version of Loom is what was on the audio track of CD. (A single, long track that the game would play short pieces of.) It didn't play any background music besides that, probably because as soon as there was any other sound (e.g. a character speaking, or using the distaff) the music would have had to be stopped.
I don't think this method of implementing speech was very common, but I guess talkie games were still in their infancy. Personally I've only seen it in Loom and Chronicles of the Sword, where the latter used the additional trick of putting half of the voices in the left audio channel and the other half in the right one, doubling the amount of speech it could fit into one disc. (But if you tried to play it in a CD player, you would hear two voices talking at the same time.)
I believe the first LucasArts adventure to have almost non-stop music was Monkey Island 2.
Hi and thanks for the reply!! :)
You're right and that is probably it, because I owned Loom both in 3 1/2 disks and, when cd-rom players came out,it came with Loom in CD as bonus. Even I played and still own the CD talkie version I obviously remember more the disk version since it was the one I used to play more.
It's a shame then though, I miss the music parts like when Bobbin wakes up, he gets all that "wake up son of cygna" dialogue and afterwards, music keeps sounding till you go see the Elders. In my case, if you skip the track that's it, absolute silence. Or when you get to the glass maker guilt and you get that whole panoramic of the green buildings you used to have music too which I don't get with this talkie version. That's mainly why I asked, since I remembered the parts with music and I was sad that it was all silent except for the few dialogues that pop up from time.
Anyways, thanks a lot for the help, this way I'll stop tweaking ScummVM's settings hehe. :P Let's hope GOG will add the disk version one day and the FM-Towns one, I'd love replaying Loom getting the best experience.
Thanks again!
