There seems to be no background music in game, but at the title menu, or when I access the option menu in game, there IS beautiful music. I wonder what happens? Is it that there’s just no bgm for the very first section of the game? I haven’t reach the first checkpoint yet (got killed by the moving platform stupidly...)

But it's kinda weird that I watched a review video and it appeared that it had some bgm even in the prison, the volume was quite low though...

If there's no background music after you've made it outside the Citadel then I'd worry. If you make it home to Zoe and there's no music it's definitely an issue

Hmm, even if I have been further into the game, there doesn’t seem to be normal music playing. Every time I enter a new area, there’s a piece of chime-like music for 3~5 secs, and that’s it. I wonder if somehow the BGMs get truncated due to some of my audio settings...

Edit: it seems that I was just being too impatient. Some new areas do have normal BGMs.

Another question though: does the game auto-save at each changing of areas, or...? I’m probably a save-game maniac (over 1000 saves for one whole playthrough for Tomb Raider 1), and I think I should at least figure out some details of this checkpoint style.

The game should auto save each time you enter a new area. But I'm actually not sure. I'm a save game maniac myself. :P There are time when I got game over and had to use an older save game

Hmm, it seems that it’s not that there’s NO BGMs, but that they stop, or maybe they don’t loop as BGMs normally should. But if I open up options and resume the game (or when I entering a new area, of course), the music will be back, for another loop. Before the music stop, there’s a piece of chime that seems to happen wherever there’s no BGM, the same as that plays right at the beginning of the asylum area, but truncated within 5 seconds.

This’s probably a thing about the audio setting of DosBox, I guess? The default setting of cpu cycles also causes problem on my notebook, in that the movies lag a lot. But changing the default “80000” cycles to “auto” solves the problem. Now maybe changing one of the audio settings can solve this, but I just know too little about those to figure out how by myself...

Even if there could be issues with the CD audio (which LBA 2 does not have, but 1 does) or DOSBox settings, the way the music plays is exactly as designed. It only plays once to its end, after entering a new area (this is also true for LBA2).

That's not true at all. The music is minimalist, but you should definitely hear something, even before you escape your cell.
