I heard one of the reviews say that the Steam version is much cheaper. Maybe it is for US customers but certainly not for Aussies.

For your amusement here's the Australian prices for Kingdoms of Amalur re-Reckoning

EA will have your soul if you buy from them.
You get 50% off on steam if you own the original game (also on steam). This lasts two month.
Also you get 10% for the first two weeks. On steam both sales can stack, so you will get 60% off if you have the original game and buy it within the first two weeks.

I bought mine here on GOG to have full control over my game and keep my soul :D
Huh, so that was it... I was about to complain they (the publisher) was treating gog like a second class citizen by not providing the same discount here. So it was because I have the game on steam. Still don't feel much like buying it though. Seems there are a lot of bugs being reported and honestly doesn't feel like much of a remaster in terms of quality? Perhaps things are higher rez but this is more of a stylistic game that wouldn't really benefit from more detailed (read realistic) textures. So the main benefit is probably for running it at higher than 1080? Presumably there would be less upscaling going on? Well whatever the case the screenshots they included on the store pages makes it look (slightly) better than the comparisons I've seen on youtube. Though that might be chalked up to quality loss due to the codec. But that just proves how subtle the so called improvement must be? Dunno, but I feel like this was either a ill planned passion project or a money grab. Perhaps both (developer vs publisher).

This right here. Haven't supported client dependent borroware in over six years and never will again. I just wish devs would support LAN gaming again. Those were the days when games came with full LAN support.

besides the graphics they also made changes that you can't see at first:
They fixed the game breaking bug, made the endgame harder (you can now also grind side quests as much as you want, you will still encounter challenging areas), aswell as adding a new and even harder Game Mode.

From the devs:

What additional gemplay changes have been performed?

Level lock has been removed
The original game determined the level of a zone on first entering, this was stored in the save file. In Re-Reckoning we re-calculate the level every time entering or re-entering a level
New zone Level calculation
The original game has all zones marked with a minimum and maximum level. on entering, the current player level was clamped into this minimum / maximum range and stored as level
We now use the current difficulty level as a means to determine the level before clamping into the minimum / maximum range. On Casual difficulty, the player level is reduced a bit, on hard and very hard it is increased. We also increase the maximum values for hard and very hard difficulty
The XP gain has been reduced to cater for the increased level of enemies and we made sure that XP is not increased when playing on harder difficulties due to the effect of beating higher level enemies
The result is that you can still out-level zones – which is desirable if it doesn‘t happen too quick. It is part of the power fantasy to be able to come back to initial zones and be over powered – but out-leveling zones you play for the first time should only happen rarely
We also made the zone Level calculation easier to modify by modders (PC only)
Loot level lock of Containers removed
Loot containers now only store their generated loot when they are opened while before they used to store it when entering a zone and were generated to the current player level
Loot generation was changed
In Re-Reckoning loot generation rules are altered so that you will more often get items that fit your characters skillset. Loot is mostly randomly generated but we increased the weights of loot that matches the players skill lineup better and we have a virtual counter that increases the chance of better loot drops when you didn‘t find anything good

Xdoubt. I've been playing the original (for the first time) and there are so many little bugs I have my doubts that they really did a deep dive on the QA. Though it's good if they really did fix the game breaking ones. Fortunately I haven't run into any of them while being generous with my hard saves.

That's certainly a bonus if you're looking for a challenge. I do agree that the original is too easy (with the exception of at least one boss encounter that drove me mad with it's glitchy camera while playing a pure mage where los is important). My impression of the original is that it's just mediocre. There are a few design decisions in the mechanics/UI that I frown at and there's nothing to write home about in regards to the gameplay loop or story. Aka nothing extremely bad or good. One thing that does perplex me is the needless micromanagement that goes into min/maxing your skills. Making sure you don't waste trainer skill points requires a bunch of respec'ing if you're not careful and just seems like a needless complication. If the intention is to gate the skill progression there are better methods imo. Honorable mention goes to quest items or rewards that you cannot sell/destroy/stash in a game that has limited inventory space (unless you use another bug to make it virtually unlimited...). I've avoided getting stuck with quest items but I have a few rewards I'm unable to get rid of ><

Oh, btw there is one oddity I noticed with the skill system that I haven't gotten around to double checking (if it's repeatable). My character had leveled up but I was banking it until I got a chance to hit a trainer but I wanted to finish the quest I working on. I was about to talk to the quest giver and I knew there was a persuasion option coming. I went into the status screen to check how many points I had in persuade and noticed that there was a '+' next to each skill row. I saved beforehand and tried clicking on the plus and successfully added a point to persuade. I got out of the status screen and went back in. My point was still applied and I could even remove it as there was now a minus there on that row.

TL:DR I temp added a point to persuade, talked to the NPC, and then removed the point afterwards. What I didn't verify is if my chance of success actually changed though.

I can't help but think of Koar as a single player vanilla WOW that was made for casuals. Perhaps the latter was fixed with the remake. :P
My GOG version has steam files. So, did GOG get it from steam, then used fixed steam files?

What files do you mean?
Actually just one, steam_api.dll

but why should that be in a GOG release?
