It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Mechwarrior 2 is the exact same engine, so theoretically these fixes should work the same for it. I think it did have a Glide mode as well, right? I'll have to try and find my old disk ...
It works OK for me, but it does lag (goes under 20 fps) when a lot of cars are on screen or when I crash into one. Is there any way to maintain a constant frame rate?

I've only had it hitch once or twice myself. If you have single core then try making sure there is nothing running in the background (including a browser). This matters less on dual core.
Aside from that I'd just back down how much of the CPU you're eating up.
I don't think there is a way to totally element the odd hiccup or two.
I'm sorry for being a bit ignorant, but is this file working for NVidia user too or we are still left in the cold for this game? I'm going to try CPUGrab, but other than that I dont know what else to do. Anyone can help? Thanks.
Info:
OS: WIndows 7 64-bit
i7 - 920
Issues:
Wobbly wheels
Rainbow menu and after the game started, cant get back to menu
Overall low quality
Using -glide for now
for those still getting the Failed to Initialize 3D hardware acceleration error, try removing (or renaming) your glide2x.dll. I scoured an old MechWarrior 2 site and found that, and what do you know, it worked for me. (I also have the atiumdag.dll that's been posted in the directory, and using dgvoodoo as well on Win 7 64).
if it helps at least one person, then it was worth it....wait, it DID help 1 person....ME! :)

All the info for those problems is on page 1.
Wobby wheels can be solved with a program like CPUGrab (make sure you tell it to use only the first core, CTRL- ALT - DELETE, task manager, right click on cpugrab.exe, set affinity, choose just the first core, this is one way of many)
For rainbow colours people have suggested either ending the explorer.exe task or opening display properties and then launching the game.
Go back and read up on the details.
For low quality, if you mean the graphics.. it's an old game :D and you'll want to be using glide for sure.

Hi Manfromx, thanks for the help. I've been getting a few successful result with the CPU Grabber. A bit of pain having to alt tab and start the app under the same affinity setting. Sometimes the music (and the voice wasnt too loud either).
Anyway, about the graphic, I've seen some youtube videos of a guy playing it in high res. What I meant was how do I set a custom resolution for the game? I'd like to play this with my native resolution (1680x1050). I completely understand about the low poly and everything, but I wanted to see if it can breath new life for this old classic game :)

For the cpu grap alt-tabbing, you can probably make a batch file that'll do it all in one click. For example the one i use for netmech is:
cd C:\Progra~1\NetmechDos\
start /affinity 2 cpugrab.exe
start /affinity 1 cpugrab.exe
start /affinity 1 Netmechdos.exe
You'll need to put cpugrab in the i76 folder, and modify the first and last lines to the path and executable for i76.
(I'm not sure if the 2nd line is really needed or not. Some say yes. Some say no. )
As for running in a higher resolution, you need a different glide wrapper. See the first post for links.

You can create a batch file that runs the cpugrab.exe and automatically binds it to the first CPU, then starts the game for you. This is what I do, although you'll still have to click "start" on the cpugrab window for it to kick in, as well as setting the CPU usage (unless you're into hex editing, in which case you can change offset 0x2010 in the cpugrab.exe file from 0x1E (30 decimal) to whatever suits your system)
@echo off
cmd.exe /c start /affinity 1 cpugrab.exe
set /p m=Click Start on CPU Grabber after setting value, then hit Enter in this window
start /w I76.exe -glide

If you download dgVoodoo (Be careful, the main site for this that google returns seems to be virus-laden. Someone posted a link in another thread to a clean copy) and unzip it into the Interstate 76 directory, the game will use it instead. Use the dgvoodoosetup.exe tool to choose your resolution and other settings. The game looks much better with this! Some settings result in graphical corruption. Here's what I use and it seems stable:
Renderer API: Direct3D9
Screen mode: Full screen
Screen bit depth: 16 bit
D3D textures bit depth: Optimal
Refresh Rate: Monitor freq is the closest supported freq
Force trilinear mipmapping
Autogenerate mipmaps
Texmem scaled to 4MB
Enable LFB access
Use hardware cache buffers when poss.
Use fastwrite for unmatching formats
Closer to a real hardware
Texture mem size: 16384KB
Resolution: 1920x1200
Enable Glide-gammaramp
I'm using a Radeon HD4870.
Hmm, maybe someone here will be able to help. I can't get glide going even with the atiumdag.dll file. Previously it said failed to initialize 3D hardware, now it just crashes when I load it up with the -glide switch, -d3d still fails to initialize. I've tried all glide wrappers posted and none of them make a difference. The game has been added to the DEP exception list but the problem persists.
Also, cpugrab helps on the wonky physics in software mode, but screws my sound at the same time, killing the will to play the game pretty fast.
Relevant specs are:
Win 7 x64
Core i5
ATi 5770
I found a good way to limit the framerate to 30 fps. Well, not a good way but it works.
If I use FRAPS and record at 30fps and lock the framerate to that then the game runs at 30fps. Of course, it also records everything I do and uses up a larger and larger amount of my disc space.

Ooh, that's clever, I hadn't thought of that, and I have fraps installed. I'll have to give that a try....
Best solution so far. Taurus now drives properly for 30 seconds at a time at the push of F9. Only problem is, it costs me about 1,2 GB per minute at 1080P, plus framerate drops. Good thing is we now know it can be done. All we need is for someone to tweak Fraps to be able to lock the framerate without recording.
I found a program called FPS limiter , but I can't get it to work with batch files or command options, and software mode it won't do. Which basically means it doesn't work.

Thanks ekj7 and Manfromx, I'll try this once I got home. A few follow up questions I guess:
- Is there any command that I can put in my batch file so that i76.exe will start using only one cpu core or will that 'start /w /affinity 1 i76.exe -glide works?
-I have dgvoodoo downloaded. There's no instruction but thanks to you, I'll try put it on the same I76 folder. Is there anything that I should do to make sure the game uses this? Is it going to be -d3d or still -glide? My card is also Nvidia, not ATI. Will this work still?
I'll give this a try along with FRAPS if it is going to work better than CPUGrab...I still cant find the best setting for my CPU that wont cause the wheels not wobbling.

Ah, now that would explain how that video was running so smoothly.
