I'm really interested in this game, but the torture part makes me a bit uncomfortable (I know it's just a game, but it still bothers me). Can you progress through the game using little or no torture? I'm sure it might be a bit more difficult, but it would be a fun role-playing challenge. Thanks.

I can entirely understand your concern about that. I dont mind violence in games, but when it crosses the line into debauchery, I dont play it. Its the same reason why I stopped watching ultra violent horror movies or movies where its just 2 hours of non-stop killing.

By the way Welcome to the Forums!

You do need to use torture at times, but those bits aren't really visceral and you only need to use it at ever so few occasions (you positively need to torture... Hmm... 5 or 6 people?)
why playing INQUISITOR game, when you don't want to torture... i don't get it.
Personally, I go for the "help people, demons, and puppies out because it may lead to a better world" angle. I pretty much consider torture to be among one of the truly evil things that humans can do, so it isn't acceptable for me. That is why I picked the Thief over the Priest, so that I could convince people for information and steal evidence if need be.
Torture is actually one of the reasons I bought this game. I thought it was cool that they touched a subject that would generally be taboo here in the states. No, it's not because I'm some demented sadist. Personally I have a distaste for which hunts and inquisitions (and for that matter hardcore fanaticism). So why would I play a game with such a back drop? To be a inquisitor that doesn't throw around false accusations or take a dogmatic approach to every case of heresy. This is after all an RPG.

It's pretty much universal that rpg's give you the opportunity to follow your own morale compass or not if you for some reason feel like coloring outside the lines.

There may be times when you are pigeon holed into things, like torture, but at least it's not trivializing it or making it obsessively graphic.

The torture thing actually drew me in as well, not so much because I wanted to torture people but just because it meant the game would likely have mature/adult themes which is very, very rare in games these days.

It also drew me in and the fact it's a RPG you can role play the way you want (e.g torture only when necessary).
Well, i confess. I play this game because i like to torture people and burn them at stakes.
Thanks for all of the responses, they gave me a better understanding of things. It sounds like within the context of the game world, the required use of torture at times makes sense and is an acceptable practice. I think I'll end up getting the game. It'll be refreshing to play a game that occasionally makes me uncomfortable. After all, that is what art should do at times.

I myself have to admit that I love the smell of freshly burnt heretics in the morning :).

amen brother, for apocalypse is near, if not already going on.
BTW, is there any difference if I choose one torture method or another?
Guys, it may seem strange but I really have no idea how to torture ppl in this game. Is it only available to specific NPCs?
Yes, you can only torture certain NPCs. You need an arrest warrant and after you put them to jail, you can talk to the sheriff to toture them.
