Hey, I think something is applying some sort of filter to make the image prettier. It comes out blurry.

Does anybody know how to turn any image filtering off for HOMM II?

In the dosbox config you can try changing the scaler to something like normal3x and/or the renderer (ddraw, opengl, overlay) to see if there is any difference. But the effect depends of your native resolution. the game is svga 640x480 so normal3x could be three times the game res. Also you can choose any other flter instead of normal, but personally I dislike them.

For example, In vga games (320x200) normal3x outputs to 960x600 and in a 1366x768 monitor resolution results in a reasonably crispier image.

EDIT: also, is convenient change the fullscreen resolution option to "desktop" or "0x0" in the same config.

If you do not want to edit files with the notepad you can find a gog configurator into the game folder to change any of those options.

I forgot something that could be interesting. You can compare between normal2x or normal3x but also you can try "normal2x forced" or "normal3x forced", with the later, the image should be even crispier. Choose which better fit your taste/configuration.

Greetings
Yeah, changing the scaler to normal3x helped a ton. This is on a 1080p monitor.

What I finally settled on is 1280x960 windowed with a normal2x scaler. I'll play around with those settings again later to see if I can get a super crisp fullscreen.

Thanks for the help!

Glad to help. You are welcome
For a supercrispy fullscreen, as I recomended before, you can try "normal3x forced" the effect should be relatively noticeable but I can not test it in a 1080 screen. In my 1366x768 screen just with "normal2x forced" the pixels are more "crispy" or "non aliased" in 640x480 games.

greetings

I like the pixel-perfect patch also available in the ECE build. In my case I keep an exact PAR as well, but I also have a 1440p monitor which makes that easier.
