Just installed the current Homm3 setup file (setup_homm_3_complete_4.0_(10665).exe). The game plays as full screen (1920x1200). This is the wrong aspect ratio: it's stretched horizontally. I used to be able to adjust the aspect ratio using DOSbox parameters, but these are hidden/not available in this version of the game. Where can I go to adjust the aspect ratio to be correct for the game? (I think it might need to be 1600x1200.)

Hi,

HoMM3 is not a DOSBox game. To ensure aspect ratio is maintained, you have to use your video card's control panel.

If you're using NVidia, you have to changle scaling to "Maintain Aspect Ratio" and do scaling on GPU. See attachment.

For other graphics cards, look for similarly named settings and change to "aspect ratio" or similar.

The Heroes III HD mod is highly recommende for playing HoMM 3.

No problem. Enjoy the game.

You might though want to try out PetrusOctavianus's suggestion too. The HD mod allow you to play in HD resolutions by expanding the map, rather than stretching the screen. And it has some other fixes and changes too:

Bless you. The Nvidia control panel setting change worked!
Annoyingly, this seems to still be an issue in 2024... the fix suggested here does not work for me as my Nvidia Control Panel does not seem to have a "Display" section (that entire section is missing in the column on the left).

There does not seem to be a way to fix this except changing the resolution in the WIndows Display Setting to 800x600 every time, and this only works on my laptop´s internal display, since I am apparently also not able to change to resolution on my external monitor.

How has GOG not fixed this after so many years?

No, that is not the only way.

Do you have an Intel or AMD Control Panel on your laptop? If so, maybe the option can be found there?
Edit: Also check if your external monitor has any scaling options in its settings menu.
