Not 3D, and you don't have a party, and writing down separate notes can be considered cheating, but if you haven't played it before, download [url=www.nethack.org]NetHack[/url]. I would highly suggest reading through the guidebook on the site.

Themock: Lands of Lore is also good. The first one I mean.

Is the second any good?

Salsa_Shark: Is the second any good?

The story is, but it abandoned the nice VGA graphics, for proto 3D with flat textured objects, and FMV characters. The controls are quirky, the GFX is not the prettiest, and launching the game on modern systems is a drag. But i must say, it's still a Lands game, and You play as Scotia's son, so.. I guess You could give it a try.

Chihaya: M&M II-III-IV-V
Mapping 3D crawlers on graph paper is annoying as hell.

ErinysGoG: Not to me, I like having those finished hard copy maps. In dark spire you do you the option of an automapper but I found it easier to look at my hand-drawn map then flip back and forth from the game to the map screen. I also learn the map better when I draw it, so I don't have to look at it at all as often.

I find it time-consuming and tedious, but hey if you like it...
For me it's like, OK another step, must draw for 30 seconds again before I pick the controller... oh dammit I drew the hallway one step to the left and the map is worthless... lol

Cambrey: I don't have a favorite... I love them all ! Currently playing Wizards & Warriors.

How is that? I bought it for $2.99 ages ago, but I never got around to it.

Do you now if it works on win7 64-bit? Looks great and I would really like to play it.

LordCinnamon: ooooh. Dark Spire. Forgot about that one, should pick it up someday. Thanks for mentioning it. Loved both Etrian Odysseys and M&M III.
EDIT: oh, and I might be wrong, but aren't the Arkania games here on GOG something you might enjoy?

I have started the arkania games but I'm at a standstill. I started with the first one. I completed the first dungeon and had some trouble finding the next. I like the combat system but the town mapping is a pain. There's no way to place notes on the automap but at the same time, it seems too large to map by hand. For people who've never played it.. I compare the combat to another obscure game: Darklands.

Arteveld: EotB is great if You don't mind/like AD&D.
I'd strongly recommend playing the classic Lands Of Lore: Throne Of Chaos if You haven't already. Great game. While not technically a 100% crawler (frankly, i'm not sure if EotB is a pure DC anyway), it bears many similatities to EotB, mostly because, Westwood Studios, creators of the first two EotB games were not given the rights to create EotB3, so they created somerthing of their own. ;)
[edit:]
There's also the late addition to the genre, dubbed "the last 2,5, stepped RPG", called Anvil Of Dawn. Though it's made by 3DO [creators of the M&M series], so don't expect wonderful gfx.;P
Also, there's this almost unknown M&M clone, called Yendorian Tales [the second and third game is FPP].
[/edit]

That might be the one that I pick up. My girlfriend loves the lands of lore series, but I've only dabbled with the second one. I actually have the big box CD version of the first (from a thrift shop). They got Patrick Steward to voice the king--he's on the box in a star trek uniform, no less. So nerdy! :D
Graphics won't break a game for me as long as I can play. I still play Nethack and ADOM and the like. I hate it when I get a pretty game with no gameplay. Pretty graphics make me smile, but who cares what a game looks like if it isn't fun.
Anvil of dawn looks interesting. There are a lot more of these games then I thought!

I picked up Dark Spire a year or so ago. Brand new with music CD for $9.99. I think the manager of the store had a grudge against the game. I asked him what it was and he scowled and said "oh, it's really old school. Really old.". I promptly bought it. ha ha.

Mentalepsy: How is that?

It's a decent game. Nothing really fancy story wise (the good old manichean scenario) and the user interface is awful (the dialogues are pain in the butt). But I enjoy the old school atmosphere and there are a couple good ideas (such as the cumulative spells, the fact that you can create a new character anytime you want and the guild system that promotes your character to another class). Also I like the narration (kind of like Trine) and the dubbing is nicely done.
At some points you have to make some decisions that might have a big impact on your character. Nothing really major in the storyline though.
Beware, the game is long and I gave up years ago before the end. This is my second attempt and so far I have played something like 50 hours and I think I have done 2/3 of the game.

Sorry no, I have no idea. I'm playing the game on XP pro...

I would love to play Ravenloft: Stone Prophet again. The setting was pretty cool

Nethack is awesome. That being said, I've never been below level 17. I have beaten the main adventure on Shiren the Wanderer for the DS. It is a roguelike. I recommend it to any DS player looking for a challenge. Don't be put off by the box art.

Has anyone played Might and Magic 1 for the NES? I booted it up and it looked prettier then the one for the PC, but is it the same game?

It is mostly the same game, however you do not get to create characters, they are placed at the inns and locked until you get there. There are also some words changed at places, which actually ends up messing up Trivia Island. You also can not physically leave Sorpigal until after you have reached level 2. Also you have to control it with a 2 button controller.
All things considered I like the DOS/Apple II version better, it's just easier to look at your party's status and everything that should be simple.

ErinysGoG: I finished Dark Spire for the DS (all three endings) and I'll soon be trying to beat Might and Magic 1. I've discovered I love these games. I'd like to hear about more complex games like might and magic 6 where the enviroment is fully 3D. But what I'm really after are games in which you only move one block at a time and you have to create your own map.
Can you recommend any good ones? I've heard of an old one called Eye of the Beholder--is that worth tracking down? I love games with a steep difficulty curve and puzzles in the dungeons. A game with lots and lots of flavor text if one exists. Some humor doesn't hurt either.
