Crosmando: Disappointing, I thought perchance that women would be less inclined by nature than us guys to want to be in a situation of firing a firearm and ending another human being's life.

Why would anyone want to be in that kind of situation?

True. I know here in Aus there's an outrageous amount of tax loopholes and concessions built into the law for military people and their families, which I think is wrong.

Correct, it's considered the child's money and the parents don't normally have the right to alter it. In many states there is mandatory wage garnishment and the state takes a minor cut. Those states have often been the target of claims of greed and perhaps rightfully so. In my state I'm able to pay my ex-wife directly, but only because we both consent. We do have to have a child support order on file with the courts however.

There needs to be a better solution to this, yes, there are exemptions (states have different names for reasons to not go by the recommended amount) but in practice I don't use any so I don't know how reticent a judge may be to sign an order including them.

Liberty: The rub is that there is no accountability for the money. What if it is spent on things not child support? The courts might say that purchasing a new car (say a porche) with that money constitutes how life would be if the kid had a nuclear family.
You're right, this makes many payers angry. I know my ex-wife has sought charity food on the same week she went to the bar with her sister. It's possible her sister paid or they just bummed drinks off of gullible guys, I don't know. I don't think poor people should abstain from all pleasures, but perhaps buying a 6 pack to enjoy at home for 3 dollars is a better idea than paying 5 bucks a drink at a bar if you're cash strapped...

Regardless, yeah it sucks, she's not obligated to maximize her income or pursue a more lucrative profession, but pretty much people don't like their exes that much, no matter what they did with the child support many exes would have a problem with it. I don't mind child support most months. I always hated spousal support (as if changing the name from alimony makes it less hateful), I loathe the very idea.

There are cases where I think people have been bullied into paying too much child support. There are cases where I think the tables skew too high for disparate incomes (the max child support in my state is ridiculous), I don't think children need enough in child support to rent their own condo or home, but they probably do need around as much as most people are paying.

Liberty: Legally, men have no influence over their reproduction. Men can only have children that women want them to have. (Anonymous male sperm donors are even getting hit by child support retroactively.)
This is a big issue, I absolutely agree that men need some sort of reproductive rights. These rights shouldn't include men making a woman's decision about abortion, but men need a way to choose whether they have offspring or not and right now they have no reasonable methods to do that.

Liberty: The question that blows up the discussion is not about women in combat but women being conscripted. If women are going to be in combat, they should be conscripted just like the men. But you will never see that happen.
I'd rather just do away with conscription.


Alright, forgive me, we probably agree on quite a bit of stuff, I guess I was reacting to a perceived tone of "man vs. woman" more than the content.

Note, though, some of those things you mentioned are actually the patriarchy deciding that men will die, because they, being in power, are not the ones that get to die. They get to stay back with all the woman who will have less suitors their own age as a result.

But at any rate, it shouldn't be about men vs. women. We are doing pretty well with the woman's revolution, let's keep at that, but it's time to start valuing men's lives too. Men are way more likely to suicide, become criminals, etc. and much of it is due to our media and society. I don't want to take away anything that women have, I'm just looking at some of it and saying, "Gee, you know that's a pretty neat idea, we'd like that too."

Strangely enough, conscription is actually super-important to keeping us OUT of stupid wars. Since we currently have an all-recruited army, the public doesn't really care when kids come home in boxes, because the kids volunteered. There is therefore less accountability and we're a lot more likely to play World Police now than in the 1970s. In some ways, I think having a peacetime draft could actually be a good thing, because the public would then be personally invested in something like Afghanistan, rather than it just being something to be ignored on the news. If we got rid of the draft entirely, the only things to discourage military involvement would be economic or moral reasons, which have a lot less traction than "my son is going over there."
