StingingVelvet: Whatever the reason for Bioshock's success the point is those elements were not complained about and did not impact sales. When I see developers and publishers talk about things like regenerating health they act like the mainstream gamer demands these things. Obviously if super popular games like Bioshock can use health packs it means consumers do not make purchase decisions on these things.
Its a fallacy to infer that a lack of compaints are indicative of a success, I do agree with you on the regenerative health being overused but in reality it makes sod all difference if the game is actually good.
StingingVelvet: Same with RPGs. Bioware act like you need to have voiced player dialogue to be successful yet Fallout: New Vegas outsold every Bioware game ever and has no voiced dialogue.
Err have you got sales data to back that claim up? That sounds pretty unlikely that FNV would have beaten Mass Effect 2
StingingVelvet: I think in the end I am saying what you are saying... just make a good fucking game. Stop thinking you need this or that, you need streamlining or whatever, just make a quality game and get sales.
On that we agree completely, quality drives sales but the need to pick up Bandaid Of Healing +2 and shove stuff in your Holster Of Infinite Holding doesn't imply anything other than carrying one of each gun and having non regenerating numerical health
Then again I'm a big weird with games, I'd like a game where you get shot and lose health where a medkit stops you bleeding to death and nothing else, you don't regain health but you don't bleed out and die
