monkeydelarge: So just because there are legal systems out there that are more garbage, doesn't make it garbage? I don't think so. Face it, the legal system here is garbage. I am doing something about it. I'm letting other people aware of how garbage the legal system is and that is all I can do, right now. I'm just one man. And I'm not a billionaire or a celebrity so fuck off.
HGiles: Posting a badly-informed and misleading rant on an international forum is not 'doing something'. It's worse than useless, because it drastically misrepresents the situation.
People who think complaining on random forums is 'doing something' are part of the problem. Go volunteer at a shelter or a legal assistance charity to free up county workers so they can do actual policing. Does your local fire station need help? Check with your city and county government for other ways to help. Write an actual email or letter to your leaders about police accountability. Show up for town hall meetings. Did you vote in the midterm elections?
All of those are doing something. This? This is not doing something.
Everything you suggested is 1000 times more useless than creating a thread on a forum. Are you that naive? If so, then why am I wasting time with you?
HGiles: For those who don't read links, a convicted pimp and burglar was accused of child molestation and convicted. Due to a 3 strikes law, he got life in prison. The accuser came forward and later confessed that the accusations were false. Her actions were driven by a terrible home life (drug-abusing mother, in and out of foster system, etc) and desperation not to be separated from her mother again.
My take: Child molestation is a really tough crime to prosecute. The victims are often so young, confused and hurt that they can't clearly explain what's going on. It's often not reported until physical evidence is long gone. It's terrible that Ithis man spent years in prison on the word of a lying, attention-seeking child. On the other hand, without knowing a lot more about the evidence and prosecution, it's hard to say what the appropriate fix would be.
ALso - while the USA legal system has some significant problems, it's still one of the better legal systems in the world (this might say more about the general terrible quality of current governments, but it's measurably true). Just because it has serious problems (like every other legal system I'm aware of) doesn't make it garbage. Just because some prosecutors relied on testimony under oath (inasmuch as kids can give that) doesn't make the whole system of law worthless.
I'm sick of people posting random MURICA (or any country) IS CRAP threads without actually doing anything about it. If you have a problem with your country and don't try to fix it, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. This is particularly true in America, where we can in fact reliably vote our leaders out of power and cause legal changes.
TL;DR Put your money where your mouth is. What did you do this week to make your government better?
Forget the fact that he was this or that. A person almost got life in prison because someone said he did something bad.

Badly informed and misleading? Not at all. If you think so, then obviously you are failing to see things for what they are.
