Washington man spent 19 yrs in jail on fake child molestation charges
http://rt.com/usa/207823-man-jail-fake-child-molestation/

In this country, our legal system hasn't evolved past the Salem witch trials. Maybe Americans should be pissed off about this instead of being pissed off at having to pay taxes?

PS
I'm not saying everyone who is a part of the U.S. legal system is garbage.

Probably next year as a new year resolution.

We are very particular about how we govern our garbage.

Since prison is a for-profit system, I wouldn't hold my breath
when they stop electing and choosing their current in power people
Well if the question is asked like this the answer is invariably "not soon".

I know it's a for profit system but still...do they really need to start throwing everyone who is accused of something in prison? When will it end? Until half our population is in prison? Because since the beginning of time, people have been accusing other people of shit that they have never done.

You had sex with my husband!

You stole my pig!

You are a witch!

You worship Satan!

You are a liar!

You are a communist!

You insulted our King!

You threatened to kill our Emperor!

You are a traitor!

BLAH BLAH BLAH

Yes people lie to destroy their enemies or sometimes to get something they want. That is why civilized people realized, evidence should be required. Look at the Salem Witch Trials. Basically everyone who was hated by someone, burned for being "witches". This kind of shit would give ex KGB agents a boner. I'm really glad that this country isn't 100% religious because in that case....another Spanish Inquisition would be coming for all of us here...

For those who don't read links, a convicted pimp and burglar was accused of child molestation and convicted. Due to a 3 strikes law, he got life in prison. The accuser came forward and later confessed that the accusations were false. Her actions were driven by a terrible home life (drug-abusing mother, in and out of foster system, etc) and desperation not to be separated from her mother again.

My take: Child molestation is a really tough crime to prosecute. The victims are often so young, confused and hurt that they can't clearly explain what's going on. It's often not reported until physical evidence is long gone. It's terrible that Ithis man spent years in prison on the word of a lying, attention-seeking child. On the other hand, without knowing a lot more about the evidence and prosecution, it's hard to say what the appropriate fix would be.

ALso - while the USA legal system has some significant problems, it's still one of the better legal systems in the world (this might say more about the general terrible quality of current governments, but it's measurably true). Just because it has serious problems (like every other legal system I'm aware of) doesn't make it garbage. Just because some prosecutors relied on testimony under oath (inasmuch as kids can give that) doesn't make the whole system of law worthless.

I'm sick of people posting random MURICA (or any country) IS CRAP threads without actually doing anything about it. If you have a problem with your country and don't try to fix it, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. This is particularly true in America, where we can in fact reliably vote our leaders out of power and cause legal changes.

TL;DR Put your money where your mouth is. What did you do this week to make your government better?

So just because there are legal systems out there that are more garbage, that doesn't mean our system is garbage? I don't think so. Face it, the legal system here is garbage. I am doing something about it. I'm showing people how garbage the legal system is and that is all I can do, right now. I'm just one man. And I'm not a billionaire or a celebrity so fuck off. I'd do more if I could. I'm not the problem. And I'm doing a lot more than you are doing. You are in fact, a part of the problem. People like you who say "well, things could be worse blah blah". Trying to make the ugly picture look better. You are defending this shit.

Which even Obama said himself he didn't have, if he can't use money for ObamaCare, then he can't go for the prisons

Posting a badly-informed and misleading rant on an international forum is not 'doing something'. It's worse than useless, because it drastically misrepresents the situation.

People who think complaining on random forums is 'doing something' are part of the problem. Go volunteer at a shelter or a legal assistance charity to free up county workers so they can do actual policing. Does your local fire station need help? Check with your city and county government for other ways to help. Write an actual email or letter to your leaders about police accountability. Show up for town hall meetings. Did you vote in the midterm elections?

All of those are doing something. This? This is not doing something.

Everything you suggested is 1000 times more useless than creating a thread on a forum. Are you that naive? If so, then why am I wasting time with you?

Forget the fact that he was this or that. A person almost got life in prison because someone said he did something bad.

Badly informed and misleading? Not at all. If you think so, then obviously you are failing to see things for what they are.

Have you done it? Any of it? I have.

No one in power will see or care about this thread. Representatives at all levels care about letters (bonus points of an actual physical letter, they don't get many of those and it sticks out). I can assure you, volunteering at shelters, especially homeless shelters, is the exact opposite of useless. It helps people who desperately need it and relieves some of the burden on overworked county officials, it's a two-for-one deal. Joining local advocacy groups can have a huge impact, they're lobbyists at the local level and have a lot of sway in what laws are made and how they're enforced.

There are so many avenues for people in America to make government better. The problem is that 99% of Americans have stopped participating in their governments. Of course it's going off the rails! We're getting the government we deserve with our apathy. If a useless post is the most you can do - fair enough. But don't delude yourself that it's a substitute for taking actual action.

ETA: I laughed out loud at the idea that volunteering at a fire station or legal assistance charity is useless. You obviously haven't ever done either and have no idea how much a difference they can make.
