It's bothering me how Rock Paper Shotgun posted an article about the Kickstarter Dilemma....

and now they've not only posted an article about Republique, but two articles about Republique.

I don't think they have as much sway as they think they do, for example: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/26/sherlock-holmes-and-the-case-of-dementia/

Sherlock still failed to reach it's target. There wasn't even a noticeable jump in funding. (if you're looking at kicktraq, I have a chrome add-on that adds funding charts to the kickstarter pages)

It just shows that people will still only fund something if they want to fund something and not because somebody well respected and bathed in a glowing light told them to. In the end it's just a case of getting the word out to people on these projects. Then the people decide. (as it should be)

I thought the problem with Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective on the RPS article was that nobody knew a single fuck what the project was about. You see discussions on Hidden Object games, horrible Sherlock pastiches etc, but only 2-3 users actually discussing the games themselves. I doubt any more than a few even made the effort to visit the KS page.

Nekro has just reached it's funding goal! :D

Nekro just reached their goal.

Here's an obvious scam that was quickly exposed and canceled: Mythic

The presentation was complete shit, I don't know how anyone even fell for it.

ArchonPC: Anyway, has anyone ever played Discord Times ? It's included with 2 copies of Legends of Eisenwald at the 25$ tier and all I found about it is "Hard-core".

Siannah: If you don't mind the client, you can try it free for 1 hour on Bigfish - http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/1705/discord-times/index.html
You can actually get the full version of it from MyPlayCity (probably not the Collectors Edition).
Best way is to unpack the installer (it's made with INNO setup) and make your own shortcut. This way you avoid any unpleasant side effects like toolbars or your browser opening every time you exit the game.
Found these two interesting game projects....

Spate
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/379113968/spate

I'm not big on platformers, but this looks quite atmospheric. I imagine many people would like it.

Alcary's Complex
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modestarcade/alcarys-complex/?ref=kicktraq

This ones interesting, I actually discovered this game a few weeks ago in passing (can't remember how) so I was pretty surprised to see it show up on Kickstarter. It looks like it could be quite a deep RPG with an interesting world to explore. I like how you can choose certain characters to react to certain conversations.

Plus it's name is awesome.

Thanks I'll take a closer look at them later. I've heard of Alcarys Complex before but (unfortunately) quickly dismissed it as YAjRPG (Yet Another jRPG). Looks like there's more to it than meets the eye.
This seems like another noteworthy one.

Legend of the Time Star
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/attackmountain/legend-of-the-time-star-a-retro-action-rpg?ref=category

It doesn't have any game play to show for itself (except a still picture), which is a big downside.....but it does sound like it could be an interesting game. The Kiwar are probably the cutest thing I have EVER laid eyes on.

57k seems like a lot to ask for something that you don't have any visible game footage yet though.

Thanks both, I'll give it a try ASAP :D

lowyhong: It's all about marketing. People don't normally care to suss out good projects. They usually depend on word of mouth, without committing any effort into researching its background. I admit even I get easily excited about a project that markets itself really well. Marketing is really the key to successful funding; everything else, including a prototype, is a subset of it.

For that matter, check out Dark Meridian. It's also quite well-developed, but have you heard a whisper about it other than on this thread? I bet if the team made the effort to really market the project, rather than just create a KS page and hope people visit it, they'd easily hit $50K.

It sucks for LoE that they haven't gotten much up till now, but really, the same can be said for a lot of other good projects. If you don't get the public hyped up about your product right from the get go to build momentum, or there is misinformation, then you risk failing. It's a very ostentatious market.
With so many developers jumping on the Kickstarter momentum, there's surely some improvements to be made on their projects. Like the "We don't want to pay for a PR guy, but we need one".
Because usually developers don't care about PR / marketing, it's publisher's job. An overcharged job according to Swen Vincke's blog, but still a required one.

Until indie dev' find a way to efficiently self-market their games, word to mouth and "social networking" are essential. And forums threads like this one :D

I hope the next video from Aterdux showing some gameplay of Legends of Eisenwald will help.

Avantre: It surprises me how often people misunderstand the premise of the 'kicking it forward' pledge. The promise is to put 5% of PROFITS back into kickstarter, not 5% of pledges. The idea is to put all money from the kickstarter into the game/whatever, making a theoretically great game that sells well and makes lots of profits. Since those profits wouldn't have been possible without the intial kickstarter, some companies pledge to return a small part of their post-release profits back into kickstarter.
I see what you mean. It does say profits there I think it's the way the graphic is designed, if you just see that and don't bother to read the text next to it it gives an incorrect impression. Or if you're just skimming the page.
I swear, every time I look at the Kiwar on the "Legend of the Time Star" kickstarter page, it's like they're saying "Fund us, Fund us"

Go away insanely cute chickens! D:

From the latest Portal update:
"We've hit another milestone with 100 backers! We still have a long way to go but we're still working hard behind the scenes to get us some world-changing breakout coverage. In the meantime, keep on keeping on with spreading the word and hitting up the worldnet via social media."
This guy is either a genius or delusional. I love it either way xD.
