Hi everybody. So my old man is a big fan of the Dune universe (games and books aswell). He comes back to Dune 2 every 2 years or so but the problem is that this time I can't find it anywhere for him, unless it's the old version whcich requiers dosbox. I noticed that GoG.com reworked a lot of games to be compatible with all the latest versions of windows (I still play Constructor on win 7) , so I was wondering if I can find Dune 2 that is easy to install and easy to access on this site? Please help me out with this , I would be very gratefull. Cheers
Salut :) No, from what I know, you can't get Dune 2 from any place other than abandonware sites.
You know what, I am currently middle in listening to Lynch's Dune's soundtrack (much to the distress of my neighbours), and was urging my friend to read it this very afternoon. It's nice to see this thread right during a Dune-mood day.

However I can't help with your question. You can vote here : http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/dune_2_the_battle_for_arrakis

and/or here : http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/dune_ii_the_building_of_a_dynasty

and check the discussion on their pages, but as far as I know Westwood is not on board, and the rights of franchise-based games are horribly tough to secure, so, don't hold your breath... :-/

Try OpenDune, an open source remake of Dune II. Haven't tested it myself, but saw it ported as browser games, so I estimate it's usable.

I thought that that was the only real version. I knew there were remakes and such, but I didn't think any of them were official or anything. It was just easy to get Dune II running natively in windows on everything until Vista.
The main issue I remember with Dune 2 was that you could select multiple units at the same time
And there was a limit for the number of units you could own :-|

Yea, it had its issues but it was amazing at the time. Its still pretty fun to play due to its simplicity. My main issue with the game though is in the last couple of missions the map would always run out of spice, and each side would have to rely on the uncontrollable free units. It made Harkonnen the best faction by far.

Edit:
Hey! Just found another option for playing the game: Dune Legacy http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/dunelegacy/index.php?title=Main_Page You need the files from the original version to play it. Not sure how its stacks up to OpenDune. Try both I guess.

Dune 2 was a DOS game, but it did get a remake called Dune 2000, which was windows compatible.

For DOS games, the GOG staff usually just configs DOSBOX in such a way that the game runs well. If you want help getting Dune 2 to run in Dosbox I (or probably quite a few other people here) could help you set up dosbox.
I suspect the main reason Dune isn't here is legal complications. It's not just sourcing the game ownership its the rights to the Dune franchise present within it as well. Like sports, car and movie tie in games; Dune has a major part of its legal content held and protected outside of the Games industry.

There has been a recent Dune series and the franchise is still in active use so there is hope that the legal matters can be resolved and the game can be an option for GOG.
