PC finally has a marketing force.

With console games you usually have the console manufacturers paying for part of the advertisement, in exchange for showing their logo. With Steam & Origin (and to a lesser degree GOG), you actually have two (or three) major players who are interested in marketing games, alongside with their own platform, thus PC games finally see some proper marketing. Combine this with the growth of some (nearly) PC-only publishers (like Paradox), which are able to market their games on major gaming sites, PC gaming have moved into the spotlight.
I think the fact that it got to the point where a high spec gaming PC could actually outperform the aging current generation of consoles helped to so we might take a hit when the next gens launch, be we should be OK in the long run still

It does surprise me though because how many households actually have gaming standard PC and not internet laptops or even tablets? In the past you'd have a 486 at home, theoretically for the accounts and writing letters but, hey, turns out this thing will run Doom too! These days you have to specifically get yourself a monster graphics card and a computer with a slot it will fit in!

Or maybe people finally realised that you play FPSes with a mouse and keyboard, that is all, there is NO other way! (except maybe one of those high end 'game commander' thingys instead of the keyboard)

tinyE: It just occurred to me, right now I'm posting in here, playing STARS!, checking sports scores, and downloading porn all at the same time on the SAME machine. Find me a console that can do that. :D

Tarm: Two console generations down the road you can probably do that. Consoles are way ahead of PCs in realising many consumers want a one machine media centre solution that is easy to use.
i'm not a consumer - not watching tv/commercials

for me a console it's a dvd player = useless
laptops are more mobile, not noisy, etc
i have a laptop, i can edit videos, i use office, i can use non m$ programs, i use debian
i can do anything

Everyone in the western world is a consumer to some degree. You have to buy things or services to survive and to make your life bearable. Be it a game, trip, gasoline, hamburger, film, bus ticket or whatever.
But I agree. Customer would have been a better word than consumer.

Can you easily play console games on a laptop?
There is a reason that consoles are ahead in this. Console users generally want things easy. It's easy to play games on a console, it's hooked up to a TV which usually is the centre of a living room so people tend to gather around there. You can use it to surf the net, watch films via services like netflix, play blueray and dvd films which is much simpler and easier as a family entertainment centre than a computer of any kind unless you have a dedicated media centre computer which isn't as easy to set up and maintain as some think.

Consoles are moving towards the media centre idea and PCs away from it which I think is a major mistake. On the other hand when PCs realise this it shouldn't be that hard for a crafty manufacturer to catch up.

don't care about console games, don't need a tv - i have a site that takes a lot time writing articles

a consumer is a person that makes decisions on feelings (sentiments) = cash cow

can i keep my server on a console? can i login to a cisco router? can i have a ftp/ irc / can i test a new distro?
can i do penetration tests for firms (audit).?
"would be silly of me to ask them for a tv to plugin my gaming console" :))
I hate to keep riding both sides of the argument here but computers are by far more dangerous. A couple of years ago I took a long trip with a group of my friends and we put a computer in charge of the whole thing. Well, the computer went nuts and killed all of my friends. It would have gotten me too but via a series of dangerous maneuvers I managed to access it's higher brain functions and shut it down. Somehow I don't think that if we'd put a PS3 in charge of everything we wouldn't have had so much trouble.

A consumer is someone that consume things and services. It have nothing to do with anything else. There are a lot of different consumers though and those that make decisions based on feelings like you said is one category.
Go look it up if you don't believe me. :)

I didn't say everyone want a single easy solution. Many do though and there is a lot of money to be made on them.
Neither did I say everything can be done with it but that's not what it's for. It's for combining a lot of different kinds of entertainment in one "box".

And yet those are a minority, since in the japanese market the PC is apparently considered the realm of the turbonerd and the horrible maladjusted pervert (see, porngames). That's why the majority of japanese games that do get localized are for consoles.

Agreed, actually I think that's part of F4LL0UTs point (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), these games are taken from many years of this minority "bone throwing" of ports to PC, as a result getting Dark Souls isn't really an example of some PC resurgence.

It's harder to crack a console, than a pc game
so the answer is money, more money for the producers

but still PC has a market not only for games, but other stuff too

DaCostaBR: What caused this resurgence in PC gaming?

JudasIscariot: Money.

LOL! That's the funniest thing I've heard in a while! Console newbies are getting desperate.

What a strange comment. PCs have been laughing at newbie consoles for 10 years. They have always outperformed newbie consoles and they always will.

I think that console newbies are finally realising that consoles are ruining games and that a laptop is ten times better and does ten times more things ... and the games are cheaper. So why on earth would a grown man buy some newbie console?

I gotta say it is an odd quote. You start with saying it will take consoles two generations to do what PCs can do right now, then follow that up with a statement that consoles are way ahead of PCs in that regard.
