Gazoinks: Yeah, adventure games have an unusually large amount of competent female characters. Probably Roberta Williams' fault (isn't everything Roberta Williams fault?). :P

roninnogitsune: probably the big reason is that adventure games tend to favor intuition, a trait seen as feminine while other games focus on violence, a masculin trait. It makes it less work to make a female cahracter seem viable in typical viewpoint of people in our current culture.
Yeah, I agree. Although somewhat ironic in Monkey Island, Elaine was much more of an action-y character than Guybrush.

Fixed that up for you
This again?
The suppressed Macho inside me feels offended and discriminated by the spreading aggressive feminism.

Seriously, enough is enough, as a male memember of this society you just have to get paranoid at some point, fearing women's right activist assaulting you in broad daylight.
This whole gender buisness is deteriorating fast and if not contained it will not end well.

The best game that adresses this issue in the most appropriate way was Mount&Blade Warband where you female character had a more difficult start but had better advantages later on because being Female during the Middle Ages just sucked big time.
I find it utmost disturbing that any game following a medieval settings allows female playable characters who aren't Nuns or wife with housekeeping duty to become heroes etc.

As a vampire, I was deeply offended by the undead tropes in that game.

JohnWalrus: While it was rotten to see the way people were harassing her in the comments, it's also pretty cowardly to disable them. I mean, c'mon, she's a big girl (or, that's the message she was advocating), so why can't she take some criticism?
If you look at some of the comments made about her videos on the net, you will see why they are disabled. Very few of the comments are genuine criticism, there tends to be a disproportionate number of threats.
avatar
JohnWalrus: Also, while I like the presentation and was entertained by this series, the only thing I've come away with is that women should always have lead or strong roles in all and every medium, and should never be kidnapped, hurt, killed, or otherwise mistreated without eventually getting revenge and showing off how strong and independent she is.
I think the point is that women in video games are absurdly disproportionately portrayed as kidnap victims, etc. My issue with this latest video is that I am not sure that it really adds anything to the first two videos. I feel that this particular trope has been done to death and its time to move on to the next one already.

mondo84: I liked the example of The Secret of Monkey Island being a good example of breaking down gender myths. I think adventure games sometimes get overlooked in these conversations which revolve largely around action or mainstream titles.
I agree, I wish she talked more about good games that did the trope correctly. Many adventure games have great examples.

it feels better saving a hot damsel then another dude
This has sorta lost all credibility with me, since it's been proven she's not even bothering to play the games she's covering, instead, swiping LPs and not crediting the sources, despite the plan to monetize the series, which goes against "Fair Use."

I'd love to see Roberta Williams do some stuff like this though, as I always looked up to her.

Who says saving people is only for romantic reasons.

I would save a dude if he has knowledge of curing cancer same thing goes for a women aswell.
