Sounds like the base game will be drm-free but the patches wont be.

Well I did find this.
"If, for instance, you lose your key or you need to reset your activation count, you would contact Perfect World for assistance."

From BrianW who is labeled as Runic Staff. So apparently it will have limited activation with a CD-key if I'm understanding that right.

They did for TL as well. They didn't want limited activations they just didn't have another way to implement the product they bought. To help out they regularly refunded all spent activations every couple of months for awhile. I've no idea if they still do this but you can definitely find the old news posts where they did it in the past.

I got lost there, mind elaborating?
I'm thinking you mean that the DRM they bought had no way to be used except with limited activations.

Dear lord.Is this one of those where if you install TL2, you format OS, that's one activation gone? (no ability to revoke?) (my copy of TL was from Steam)

I'm curious why the DRM wouldn't let them give 99 activations for the software. I can't think of any software I've installed more than a couple dozen times.

Pretty much, they needed activation, the product they bought couldn't allow unlimited activations, so they set it to 10 and kept refunding activations to every activated user every so often.

I can't answer that one specifically, though maybe Runic did on some occasion, I no longer recall if so. If I had to hazard a guess I suppose it might be a contractual stipulation with the software vendor to keep the cost at a certain level.

Amazon.de is selling the boxed pre-order: http://www.amazon.de/Runic-Games-Inc-Torchlight-2/dp/B0054IAHMY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335622702&sr=8-1

Does anyone know what kind of DRM will the boxed version come with?

NightK: I hope we get Torchlight 1 and 2 on GoG!
yeah, that would be nice.
avatar
nijuu: Pre order is up for Steam and also through Perfect World.Question is, is there a DRM free version through Runic or not?.
avatar
Gersen: There is no DRM-free version of Torchlight 1 (not anymore at least IRC the very first version was), the one you buy through their website has a custom online activation.

DRMfree and on sale Torchlight 1 -- enjoy ^_^ From what's be promised and a few moves by Encore it seems they'll carry Torchlight 2 and i will again buy 2 copies...

But is it sure that this version remains DRM-free after having being patched to 1.15?

IRC the 1.0 downloadable version was DRM-free too but after some patch were installed an online activation was required, I wonder if it's the same for the retail version.
I'm happy to have just discovered that Torchlight 2 will only require Runic Account for internet play and there is a LAN mode.

So does that mean people on Steam Works can't play with Runic Account players?
Im more confused now. Is this runic thing a closed server? Or just a way of verifying sold copies?
