bioshark: I am really wanting to play Torchlight 2, but I don't know how much time I should wait for it to come to GOG, if it will ever come here.

Currently it's on summer sale on Steam for just under 5 -Euro, but my conscience doesn't let me make this step, knowing that there is a possibility for it to arrive on GOG.

What to do...what to do....
I definitely don't want to sell my soul to those vampires...
To save your conscience you could buy the non-steam-version directly from the programmer. It's standing there at 9.99$ - that should be 7.50€.

javier0889: I don't really get the hate towards the first Torchlight. I mean, hack and slash games can get old a little bit fast, but other than that it's pretty good. And you could play the single player campaign offline, which some other games starting with D and ending with iablo 3 couldn't say.

Lack of multiplayer affected the first Torchlight, maybe?

hedwards: Because it's tedious. It starts out OK, but the game outlives the amount of actual gameplay by quite a bit. I tried playing it and it was fun for a while, but after a while you wind up with just the same thing over and over again.

It's the same basic problem that Diablo had, but because Diablo was something that was more or less new, it was a bit easier not to realize how mind-numbingly repetitive it was.
That's what I meant when I said hack and slash games get old pretty fast. You can only click and upgrade your gear with ph4t l007 so many times. Still, I'd say both Diablo and Torchlight have their own charm, even when considering their shortcomings.

tinyE: XD Yes, and this is where I show how incredibly stupid and vain I am :P, I would like to have one icon there for the game and one for the launcher so I can check for updates from time to time, but I don't want it to be the same looking icon. Sure I could go to the default and change the launcher icon to something like a star or disc but I thought maybe I could snag a .jpg of a game character or Runic logo and make that the icon. What can I say, I have too much time on my hands. :P
avatar
Quasebarth: My bad, well then use the editor icon in the folder for one of them and the normal one for the other.

Alternatively you can use any picture from "Torchlight 2" from Google or other search machines to create your own icon by downloading it to your computer, well simply save the picture from your web-browser as .bmp file. The picture size does not matter much. Windows will scale it to an icon, although you should probably not choose a desktop wallpaper to be an icon. Then rename any filename.bmp you want to use to filename.ico to make it an Windows icon and copy it to the game folder. Do the exchange in the link like I suggested earlier and you should be fine with your own personal icon.
COOL! thank you so much. :D
As somebody else mentioned, I wonder to what extent GOG Galaxy could encourage devs to bring highly-desired multiplayer-focused games like Torchlight 2. I assume Galaxy is being created initially in mind for "in-progress" titles like Wasteland 2.

probably not for Torchlight II. It does not use Steamworks for MP, but their own servers (which is why you must log in if you want to play MP), so I do not see any reason why they should use Galaxy if they decide to sell it here.
I'm not sure that Galaxy will do anything to bring Torchlight II to GOG.

My impression of Galaxy is that it is trying to replicate the gaming platform of steam without DRM. It has been repeatedly stated that it is entirely optional, and as such, probably wouldn't change any publishers current stance.
Another slightly off topic question, or maybe not. TL 2 now famously has a head crab as a side character which belongs to whoever owns the Half-Life franchise. So who is that and what are the odds of those ever getting here? No HL then probably no TL 2, or am I totally wrong here?

Nope, nothing of the sort. The side character could probably be modified to remove references to Half-Life or completely erased from existence.

I would guess that Runic has a general commercial license to use the headcrab character, which probably isn't tied to the platform it's distributed on (and independent of Half-Life).

Yes, but compare Diablo to Diablo II and TL to TL2 and you'll see what I mean. They can get old fast, but Diablo had the excuse of being the first to really grab people's attention. TL wound up like that because they didn't have the funding to complete the game properly

Why would Valve have any right to the headcrab? They didn't originate the idea, it's basically something they ripped off from the Alien franchise and I'm not even sure if that was an original idea back then.

How is that different than Age of Wonders 3, then? http://www.gog.com/game/age_of_wonders_3

"Multiplayer notice: Currently, the multiplayer options available are: Hotseat and Online Multiplayer (requires a unique CD key, which will be located in your game shelf, and an on-line account with Triumph Studios)."

Rhineland: Which kind of DRM?

tinyE: You have to log on to start it.

So which is it? Is it "Log on if you want to play multiplayer" or is it "Log on if you want to play at all"? There's rather a big difference, you know.

I can only speak for the boxed retail available here in Germany which came without Steam integration.

The game uses a key check after you fire it up the first time after installation. I have also not tried if you need to be online to verify the key, but the game box says so at least. The key verification is completely anonymous and not tied to an account. After this you can play offline single player without account or log in to online multiplayer with an account. I never made such an account and I don't know if there is a LAN mode working "offline". I suppose the game does not have a LAN mode either though.

Because it's not a general alien brain parasite, it's specifically the headcrab from the Half-Life series. For an analogy, 'space marine' is a general concept idea, but if you want to use the Space Marines from W40K, you need Games Workshop's permission first.

you need to log into the launcher if you want to use it, but it can be by-passed by starting the exe directly. When the game runs, you have the option to log into your runic account. If you do not do so, you can only play SP, if you want to play MP you need to log into the account.

So, you do not need to log in at all if all you want is to play SP. However you need to log into something if you want to fetch the latest patches or if you want to play MP.
