stonebro: Assorted childish attempts to bait a flame war, in vain.

Your quote above is just about the most almost-ironic thing I ever read.

coldalarm: Morrowind - I just found it... Bleh. The combat did my tree in, I got lost, never had any idea what I was doing... You get the idea.

See, I loved Morrowind and *hated* Oblivion.

+1 for absurdity.
blah blah blah, my opinion is more legitimate than your opinion, blah blah blah
1. Redneck Rampage - title pretty much describes why this is such a disappointing title, not even mentioning the broken inventory system, headache-inducing music and broken weapons. what is this game trying to be? bailed mid-first level because my character was too drunk to even move much less aim (seriously)
2. Descent 3 - completely abandons the moody, claustrophobic atmosphere of the first two games for "open" levels (see: bigger rooms), rainbow colors and superfluous story. also, it's impossible to hit *anything* in this game. bailed after the first level.
3. Morrowind - what's going on? tried to follow the main storyline but every town has a thousand buildings and ever building has a thousand rooms and i got bored after getting killed by rats in some old woman's basement for the 300th time. skipped entirely
That's just off the top of my head. I agree with a previous post citing Half-Life 2 as extremely overrated, and games like Soldier of Fortune and Homeworld: Cataclysm are fun until you reach the buggy, hack-filled multiplayer modes, which lower the overall scores dramatically.
I would say nearly every game, with the exception of some classics and favourites. I mean, when you compare games to novels and movies, they all fall a little short on the illusion of providing the great experience that you imagine you will have. Especially the art direction and writing is often secondrate compared to what is possible in other media (which can be legitimately called art forms) and the more experienced you are, the more pointless all the repetitive gameplay ideas seem to you.
I've just started Psychonauts because of the great offer on GOG. Sure, it's good and funny, but essentially it's hardly more than a mildly entertaining cartoon with a bunch of gameplay elements that are all extremely familiar. Or Dragon Age. I've waited since the first reviews in 2004 or something. Now that I have it I haven't even bothered to complete my first playthrough so far. It's often a drag, strangely unbalanced and dry... I continue to return to it and then it can be entertaining, but not as fulfilling as I might wish.

Anyway, either you contribute to the discussion (belittling other people's posts in a highly subjective thread isn't contributing), or you fuck off. Your choice.

Thank you very much.

anjohl: 2) Deus Ex. Held by so many as the ultimate game, for me the terrible controls and archaic engine render it unplayable. Likely a victim of my "has to be played initially while it's current tech" theory.

There are mods to improve the graphics, even with the dated graphics I think it is awesome.
To stay on topic, my three largest let downs that I remember are:
Deus ex: Invisible war; While the graphics were improved, they lost their dark atmosphere and gained a plastic-ish one. The dumbed down inventory and game mechanics were VERY annoying as I don't see why they even had to be removed for a console. I also feel that the combat moved from a more tactical Deus 1 to run and gun in Deus 2.
The greatest pity is that the game is actually decent, it just could not live upto the original and a large part of that was due to intentional alterations. (Note: there are mods out there which improve the graphics, I still recommend this as a game to play, just don't expect a game as good as deus ex).
Hopefully Deus ex 3 will return to the excellence that was the original, it is sounding good so far.
Neverwinter nights: *Sigh* From Baldur's gate 1+2 to NWN was such a disappointment, the main storyline has some interesting moments, but very few and very short. Moving from a 6 man-party to controlling just one person largely removed the tactics and thought. However there are some truly awesome mods out there, (though alot of crap as well).
My favourite is a trilogy where you play a paladin, unfortunately the 3rd in the series will likely be never completed.
While I was not too impressed with KOTOR, I am eagerly awaiting Dragon age (hoping they will release a game of the year edition containing all mods and the like and I will buy it then). (For those who don't know, Bioware has produced all the games in this paragraph)
Dragonshard: I heard about Dragonshard shortly after playing games such as Icewind dale 2 and Baldur's' gate 2. I was hoping for a game which allowed me the same character development and similar story quality but with squads of soldiers instead of just the 6. The graphics was very cheesy and cartoony, with game mechanics similar to that of "armies of exigo" ( I believe that was the name of the game). Despite being advertised as a role playing-strategy hybrid set in a dungeons and dragons universe, it had no role playing worth talking about, didn't require much tactics and if it wasn't for the fact that it was advertised as being dungeons and dragons and compared to baldur's gate I would never of known it was a DnD game. Game reviewers tended to give it decent reviews so I don't know if I just had high expectations but this was my greatest disappointment.
I am still waiting for a good DnD strategy game, allowing character customisation similar to Baldur's gate or Icewind dale 2 (skills, feats, inventory etc) and similar atmospheres. but with strategic and tactical game mechanics similar to X-com apocalypse.

Yep, basically the reason theyre not making hardcore truly free RPGs anymore. Dont worry, Ive seen more posts like that - I just dont like when people judge the game before they actually TRY it. First time Ive played Morrowind was in my 14 years - and that was with a vocabulary in my hand for crying out loud, I couldnt say a word in english!

Doom 3 - One of ID's worst , pitty original Doom is a classic are we all agreed?
...

i have D3 xbox version [works smoothly also on x360], polish and english boxed versions of D3. ..and D3 and D3ROE from steam ID all in one [some nice promo in the past]
if you like old doom so much you have to try 'Classic Doom 3 mod' [Nominate for Mod of the Year 2009]. it's first episode of first doom on D3 engine. oh -and there is music from old doom played on real instruments [masterpiece!] - i highly recomend that mod to everyone wether you love D3 or ju're just disappointed]
at least give a try and google some screens or youtube flicks!

Doom gameplay wouldn't work now anyway, unless you made it like Painkiller. Doom 3's gameplay could have used a fair bit of work. It needed some randomness in there and the demons teleporting in all the time made it perfectly possible to implement that. But instead it relied too heavily on triggers. But, overall, it was the right direction. Just not the right implementation.
