hey ya'll I got to thinkin' about 'em. I got Rainbow Six Vegas on the xbox, and I hated the controls (auto inverted).
Anyway, the games seem like a generic FPS shooter type, like.. nothing to write home about. Anyone here got any good stories about it? anyway, I might as well mention their cheap on steam.

I thought Vegas was ok, nothing special by any means (got kind of repetitive after a while). I did however enjoy GRAW1 though. Was a solid game for 360. My favourite Tom Clancy series remains Splinter Cell though (lost count of how many times I replayed Chaos Theory).
I got RB6 Vegas because I was a fan of the old RB6 games.
Unfortunately Vegas feels very different.
Long ago I was reading a lot of his novels, but fortunatly grew out of the "bestest of the bestest" storylines and the techporn stuff.
But the old RB6 Games are still great.
Well vegas was quite rightly panned for not being R6 but other than that it was fairly decent for a console shooter. The thing is that if it wasn't claiming to be Rainbow 6, my opinion of it would be a lot higher.
The game isn't that special in single player but a mate and I played both 1 & 2 over xbox live on "realistic" difficulty and in co-op mode, with voice chat coordination and with another player who understands the idea of not running in screaming like a halo kid, it's bloody good

I seriously think your avatar is helping your rep.
edit:
So on to the topic, I was mostly wanting to hear about the games on sale at steam, but that's cool too, whatever you got stories on. I really think like RB6 vegas is uninteresting and I'll probably trade it in or something.

Hehe well it's certainly not hurting. I got lucky the other day and answered 2 questions before you and your helpfulness showed up...
The ghost recon games are good but the first one has some very small maps, smaller than any other combat game I've played. GRAW2 was a good shooter though the mods helped it a bit

I would like the old Rainbow Six from...1998? It's not bad, though the PS1 version was poop. Then again, this ain't Good Old Console Games. But I did remember the polygons were hurting. It is available in the Playstation Store for PS3/PSP though.
"Raven Shield" is the one I enjoyed the most.
I must say that I thought Raven Shield was the best at the execution phase, if they'd included such detail on a planning phase as well then it'd be the best of the series.
Thats one of the things I really miss, the pre-mission planning & 1 shot kills was what made rainbow 6 unique, the closest you can get to that now in a tom clancy game is using the tactical map in the PC version of GRAW2 which is sort of like a mini-rts.
Oh and weclock, thats probably the most important thing to note about GRAW & GRAW2, radically different games on PC and on console, they're nothing alike at all. Ubi went through that phase about then, Splinter Cell Double Agent had a massively different PC/360 version than the original xbox, the most notable difference being that the original xbox version was GOOD and the PC/360 version was... less so.

Mmm... so would you recommend GRAW and GRAW2 for a "Raven Shield" lover?
PS: Now I think, I enjoyed SWAT3 more than any Rainbow Six. SWAT4 is also pretty good.
Go and buy GRAW 1 and 2. They are much better than Vegas series. Also GRAW is more tactical like older Rainbow Six games. You will love it I promise.
I was a fan of the original R6 series, rather enjoyed the original Ghost Recon, and even liked Vegas a bit.
But I didn't like GRAW. Surprisingly, it wasn't because it had been 'dumbed down' or 'consolised' - quite the opposite, I thought it was far too complex and involved - there was an INSANE amount of micromanagement, and it just didn't flow and was generally frustrating and unfun to play. My two cents. I haven't played GRAW2.
It's true that GRAW brought back some of what made R6 unique, but I don't think it did it very well. Yes, planning is now important again - but it's all improvised planning done during gameplay, which is something the SWAT series (and Ghost Recon 1) did much better.

I'd recommend GRAW2 first (unless you were buing that bundle in which case you'd get them anyway), I didn't play much of 1 but 2 felt more polished. Ghost Recon 1 & 2 were contemporaries with operation flashpoint and were also in the challenging basket so they'd probably be good for an R6 lover. The planning thing with the map in GRAW 2 is improvised and in real time but it's not overly complex once you get the hang of it, it mostly boils down to 'select unit, scroll map to destination, click and drag to set his post-move facing'. Of course the last part is where some of the AI problems can occasionally manifest. I had no trouble in this regard but 2 of my friends had the AI ignore the facing command or do the facing command correctly but on the wrong side of cover. 'Results may vary' as the saying goes. I think there was an AI mod released that was supposed to fix that.
SWAT3 was freakin awesome though, I loved that game to death and several people I know would buy it in a heartbeat if it was on GOG. It was always my dream to get a 3-4 player coop going on that and clear the whole place out. The thing I loved the most about it is that you were supposed to arrest people rather than kill them, it was so refreshing!
I didn't play enough of 4 to form an opinion (one of the pitfalls of not owning it) but after seeing it was impossible to shoot through a chainlink fence, I kind of got turned off. It's a tiny thing but that sort of thing is usually indicative of other stupid design choices.
I think I'll buy both GRAWs then. Also, SWAT3 coop could be frigging sweet.

if GOG ever gets it, you're on
