PMIK: But who is the worse in this situation, Assad or the Russian and Chinese governments supporting him?

I mean, we don't expect any more from Assad, he's just another middle eastern dictator. But these nations have veto power, and a permanent security council seat because they are supposed to have a sense of responsibility in the problems that only "united nations" can hope to solve.
Thats the worst thing about the UN, the countries that have committed serious war crimes ALL have veto power, poachers turned gamekeepers. The UN is a farce.

SimonG: Since then, it has always been the general perception of the world that the US is only pursuing their own interests, not the "greater good".
And I would say the same thing most of the time, but often times both goals align.

SimonG: Any military action in Syria must be done by the Arab League. Forgein involvement must be restricted to countries with no colonial history in the middle east (which doesn't leave much) or to pure support roles. And I'm still not sure if an end of the Assad regime would make the whole Iran situation better or worse. It will weaken Iran, but will that make them more aggressive or more reasonable?
Unfortunately the countries in the Arab League are far more self serving than the US and other western countries. There is not much love between the arab countries themselves due to a complex mishmash of religous and cultural differences.

In terms of Iran, unfortunately it looks like the situation will explode some time this year, one way or another. Both sides are steadily increasing the rhetoric and unwilling to compromise. Israel is making it more and more clear that they will strike if Iran continues, and (without making any judgement) who knows what kind of chaos would follow that.

In terms of your earlier question SImon, yeah I don't know why we're talking about it now. I guess its still in the headlines everyday and the OP just wanted to see what others here think.

StingingVelvet: It's funny that in the US I always hear about how we need to stop being the world's police and how the world hates us for it. Then I go to Georgia as a volunteer and everyone here loves the US stepping in and wants them to help smaller countries and set an example. I guess it depends on where you go.

Anyway, targeting civilians means you need to be put down, and if we're the only ones that can do it then let's do it.
As far as Georgia is concerned they'll be more than happy to support anyone who will stop them from being steamrolled by Russia over and over again...
In regards to the why i made this topic, GOG is available in most countries around the world, both western and eastern, people of many beliefes ages and circumstances. Where better to get the opinions of others than a site not linked with politics?

Im also pleasently surprized this didnt turn nasty, with it being a touchy subject for some people i though there would be some more heated coments

But what do you think of the situation.
I have always a very pessimistic view of such situations - so I never anticipate these (peaceful) revolutions that happen from time to time. I guess it will go on for a long time and the people in syria will suffer a lot. The best option is to leave the country.

I detest Assad and the heads of Russia supporting him. I also do not see enough support from the surrounding countries to end this from outside. So I do not see any good solution soon. They should flea whilst they can. It's not worth it.

I am probably a coward by nature.

Not that we really stopped that anyway.

I guess this goes to most (at least semi-powerful) countries. I feel the same about Germany (and France). Sure they are pushing other EU countries together to "save Greece" with more loans and shit... while in reality they are just tricking the other EU countries to circulate money through Greece to French/German banks in order to save them.

So, eventually it is the other EU countries who have to pay to the banks their collectibles from Greece. Not cool.

The correct way to proceed would be that French, German, UK, US etc. reinforce their banks against the coming losses from Greece, and other EU countries stay out of the mess.

About Syria situation... it makes me so mad that I'm actually thinking of playing on the terrorists' side on Counterstrike later today.

Haven't been following this... but after what the real terrorists to Libya, I wouldn't care if suddenly North America gets whipped out from the face of Earth, let alone what happens in Africa.

EDIT: Should mention, just before you trash-talk me. I have a very close friend who (has been there a few times) has a very close friend that lives in that region. They say the people of Libya were gods compared to the average NA / EU citizen with free healthcare, free education, many rewards directly from the government for achieving something great... among other things.

I can tell you at least two good things that came from Germany:

Garrison and The Great Giana Sisters.

Syria doesn't have even that much.

But that couldn't happen again,
We taught them a lesson in 1918
And they've hardly bothered us since then......"

reaver894: The Assad situation.

Does it fall into the grounds of warcrimes or crimes against humanity?

Its still "unconfirmed" whether the shelling of civilians however refusing humanitarian aid (the red cross are waiting with supplies both meds and foodstuffs) could be considered crimes against humanity.

PLEASE TO NOT FALL INTO CHAOS

But what do you think of the situation.
Since he planted landmines, it might even fall on genocide, since he apparently hinders Syrians from leaving Syria and slaughters all he can find.
