DCT: "Abandonware" doesn't really mean shit.

tinyE: Amen. I hate abandonware. The tweeking and patches needed to get it running aren't worth the headache.
But SS1 is DOS

That's kind of what I meant by tweeking. There are a lot of old DOS games on GOG that I can get free (legally and non) but figuring out DOS box, while easy for a smart person, is a trial for yours truly. GOG takes care of it for me and I don't mind spending a few bucks for that; mind you I wouldn't pay $20 for it but I can push $5.

Crosmando: Weird, well it doesn't matter considering SS1 is abandonware and the "System Shock Portable" version made by fans is better than running it vanilla.
And is patently illegal, just like all so-called "abandonware".

You ever play Marvel Ultimate Alliance? Every time I see your avatar I feel compelled to have a go. Granted GR isn't the strongest character in the game but he has the coolest looking special moves.

Play it. Love it. I have the entire series, including the "precursor" X-Men Legends games... crap, now I want to pull them out again. Looks like I'll be dusting off my PS2 this afternoon.

I'd like some evidence for this.

Regardless of whether or not a game is being actively marketed and sold, someone somewhere still owns the rights to sell and/or distribute that game and it is illegal to distribute it without their permission. Those rights cannot be "abandoned" and do not expire. It is the textbook definition of software piracy. All "abandonware" is illegally provided for download, except in those incredibly rare cases where a rights holder has given permission to distribute, which makes the game "freeware" not "abandonware". Just because some rights holders don't choose to prosecute "abandonware" (it's usually not worth the expense) does not make it any less illegal.

What a load of bunk, games exist to be played, I give zero fucks for your dumbass fanboy opinions on this, you are obviously only saying this rubbish because this is GOG.com forums and you feel the need to score some post ratings by talking like that.

If a developer/publisher no longer cares to sell/support their game, via a distributor like GOG or otherwise, then it's fair game, they obviously do not care about the game and do not want gamers to see it.

It's because of dumbass opinions like yours that the heritage and history of PC gaming is being forgotten, because the developer went bankrupt over a decade over and the legal files are probably gathering dust in some abandoned office space.

Also, stop word dropping "illegal" like it's some kind of bomb. You sound like less of a gamer and more of a fanboy, which is probably why you have all that delicious Rep amirite? Less time shitposting on forums and more time playing games you for champ.

Just picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance last week, been having fun with it so far. My daughter likes playing it too as her favorite superhero so far is Spiderman.
Dang it, and I payed 50 bucks for the boxed version. Oh well at least now I have Shodan looking at me from the shelf.

Crosmando: vitriolic snip
From the "Law" section on Wikipedia:

"n most cases, software classed as abandonware is not in the public domain, as it has never had its original copyright officially revoked and some company or individual may still own rights. While sharing of such software is usually considered copyright infringement, in practice copyright holders rarely enforce their abandonware copyrights and may allow the product to de facto lapse into the public domain to such an extent that enforcement becomes impractical.

Rarely has any abandonware case gone to court. But it is still unlawful to distribute copies of old copyrighted software and games, with or without compensation, in any Berne Convention signatory country."

Wow, overreact much? You asked, I answered. You don't like the undeniable facts I have laid out, that's your problem. I only brought it up because GOG is one of the few places actually doing something about the problem of "abandonware" in a completely legal way that not only actively preserves gaming history, but further encourages the devs, publishers and other rights holders to participate in that preservation. They don't need the potential hassle of ignorant forum members pushing illegal software, which could come back to bite them in the ass when one of those rights holders decides they don't want to work with a company that allows that stuff in their community.

As for my rep, I got that by actively participating in these forums in a (mostly) positive way for over 4 years now; answering peoples questions, not flying off the handle for no good reason, generally being decent to anyone here. You might try doing that yourself sometime.
Damn, finally I can get my hands on this game without spending a fortune.

Tomorrow will be a happy day filled with SS2.

You asked for evidence, he gave it, and now you attack him. Take your own advice about shitposting.
