Gremmi: If I remember correctly the TAGES runtime driver only gets installed at first launch, rather than at install, so as long as you install, then patch before running, TAGES shouldn't touch your system.

Sadly, no, Tages get installed with the rest at installation, to verify this, you can install the game on windows 7 and reboot, you will get an error message when you reboot saying that a driver, Tages, is not compatible, to fix this you simply need to download the latest driver from Tages website or to install Patch 1.5 and to remove tages :)
Hm, all the games I have that use TAGES (admittedly not a great deal) all install the driver at first launch (with the whole 'This will install drivers. You will need to be administrator' error, which promptly fails for older games on Win 7 anyway). I presume Witcher might be different then.

Yup it is, but, at launch, it does a check with tages server. People could not play the game at all when Tages server was down. You are not wrong as how Tages usualy works but yeah, our Poland friends like to do things differently :)

Hummnnn . . . even better info . . .=)
BTW this game is awesome. Only problem with it is... it does become super easy on any setting as you get close to the end. Making some of the big fights seem like non-events.

Thanks for the tip !
I've heard good things about The Witcher. I don't buy games with DRM so I gave it a pass . . . with the 1.5 patch and some file removal I will be giving it a try. 9GB was too much to download (for me) so I was planning on getting a box copy . . . besides . . . I still like having a disk . . .=)
Downloading the patch now and will try to pick up a copy this weekend.
Edit: bonus having our own Witcher guy here . . . no line . . . no waiting . . . =)

To solve this, you can grab the flash mod

Flash mod?? let me see that . . .
Waiting 3 yrs to buy Witcher is going to pay off for me . .. DRM free, enhanced version, latest patch, director's cut patch and a mod to make it insanely hard . . . what more could a gamer want?
avatar
Stuff: what more could a gamer want?
the ability to talk about the game with people who are just discovering it at the same time you are?
oh wait, you don't.. you don't get that.

Oh, I get it . . . . . . . . . .guess I should have gotten it when you did or it's not worth playing? One of the reasons I like GOG is finding the games I missed . . . now that you put it that way . . . I guess their not worth playing either . . .

No, I got it super late too, just saying, that waiting isn't always worth it, sometimes it's important to get a game on release, otherwise you find out things like "would you kindly" or "wifearm" kind of things and you totally miss out on all the hype and the craziness. sometimes the initial launch is what makes a game fun, and the game itself sucks.

I agree, being in the frenzy of a new release is/was exciting . . . I am more excited about finding DRM free games to add to my collection. I left the bleeding edge a couple of years ago after a SecuROM system melt down and never looked back. Seems every game I find, regardless of release date, will have an enthusiastic following some where.
I understand the rush of playing a new game, did it for YEARS . . . just find the pace and lack of problems of playing older games with all the patches released and problems worked out is . . . enjoyable. And I don't have to listen to all the screaming and hollering . . . =)
Course . . . that's obvious or I wouldn't be here on GOG.

Yeah well on our side of the ocean, there was about no advertisement done for this game by Atari so, there was no real hype, I learned about it on release day and while searching for a good old style RPG. It was buried on the 3rd or 4th page in google.
But I could be discovering it with you, yeah I have had the game for over 2 years now but I never got past early chapter 2. Not that I dont like the game but, when the game was released, many had issues with it, I went on the forum for help but there was not much there so, I fixed mine, played till after prologue and went back to the forum. I liked the game so much that I wanted others to enjoy it to. So I start help them troubleshoot their computer (cause most of the problems were related to the users computer. I tried couple of time to play it again but always spent most if not all of my spare time on the forum.
I dont regret it tho, I got to meet many great people. The joy and excitement of those that I help get the game running properly worth more to me than many other things.

I was excited to hear about Witcher but . . . having decided that I had had enough of DRM on my systems . . . followed it only long enough to hear if it had DRM. Then, like you, I heard it had lots of issues. Somewhere in there I found GOG and now have more "new" games to play than ever before.
I do like a good RPG game and eventually heard many more good things about it. I had stopped following it until chautemoc mentioned that it was DRM free in another thread. You joined this community today . . . answered my last few questions . . . now I have another great game to add to my collection of DRM free games . . . best of all . . . it's only three year old . . . sweet!
Got the patches downloaded this evening, try to pick up a copy over the weekend but . . . may be months before I get to it . . .=)
Edit: Thanks for all the links . . . real time saver

Stuff: Since Mobidoy joined our community a few minutes ago, I thought I would ask a Witcher question.
Q: I know the 1.5 patch removes the DRM from The Witcher but . . . If I buy a boxed copy from Amazon or BestBuy . . . will it install DRM on my system? If so what kind? And lastly . . . if it does . . . does the patch completely remove the DRM files and registry entries?
avatar
Mobidoy: As Navagon said, patch 1.5 removes its functionality and if you look at this FAQ you will see how to remove the left over. They also released the director's cut edition patch which get rids of the censorship that was imposed by Atari in North America so, no need to look for an European edition to play the game in all it's glory :)
Tages is not invasive has other copy protections, it is only a disk check but that can conflict with Alcohol 120% and Daemon tools or more precisely, it's spdt.sys file. It is not hard to remove it and believe me, the game worth it :)
If you need more info, let me know :)
edit: was writting this while you replied... Hope this serves you. :)

Thanks so much for the links and information. I have had the Enhanced Edition for a bit but will look into playing it now with the 1.5 and Director's Cut Patches. Welcome Aboard.
