Luisfius: Considering that the game was developed by the Dear Esther devs, yeah.
This sums up the first thought I had when reading the complaints. I never played through Amnesia, but this one being linear with no real puzzles shouldn't be a surprise as it was made by people who are famous for a "game" that consists of holding forward for 90 min or so.

Crosmando: Except that this game was a sequel to Dark Descent, so when you're removing things you are messing around with the original fans and their hopes. Actively wanting features removed from a game and not caring about the effect this has on the series as a whole, as well as the original fans, just because you don't like those features, is the very definition of selfish.

PC gaming itself is a graveyard of franchises ruined by developers who made disloyal sequels which took a giant dump on the original game and it's fans in the hope of more casual gamers (like StingingVelvet).

StingingVelvet: Calling me a casual gamer because we disagree makes you look silly. Don't be so reactionary.

I am someone who has bitched about changes made to FPS and RPG games for over a decade now, I get the criticism of simplifying games. At the end of the day though I recognize it's all opinion. I get that horror fans are getting shafted, but I can't lie and pretend I don't find the game more my style now that they have changed it. Pretending I agree with you would make me a poser asshole.
I did not like the sanity system at all, its annoying and I personally thought Amnesia The Dark Descent was overrated, so that makes me causal eh? than again I am the guy that beated Ultima IV.

Also, one of the extras is a walkthrough?

It comes with a walkthrough?

Really?

Is that necessary?

Ultima IV? Might as well play Candy Crush!

;)

Still haven't managed to beat Warrior of Destiny yet eh? Those city guards are a bitch. And it's not about some binary definition of casual and not-casual, more like being loyal to the horror genre and the original Amnesia TDD game. So yeah if chineseroom wanted to make a casual walking simulator with pseudo-horror setting fine, but using the established brand of Amnesia to try and screw gamers out of money to do it is scummbaggery, pure and simple.

Same way I wouldn't have minded if Bethesda made a sci-fi/post-apoc FPS/RPG, but they just had to take a shit on Fallout franchise to do it.

It's disgusting behavior and devs who engage in it deserve to go bankrupt.

Maybe it tells people when to feel scared? A feelthrough of sorts.

Warriors of Destiny imo is a little too hard out of all the Ulitma games, I do like Ultima 6 and 7 for its seamless open world (I played them a bit I manage to do well in 6 and 7 better than 5) and yes Ultima Underworld is awesome.

But right now I am beating the Windows RPGs like Baldur's Gate 1, and I am doing far well heck my Fighter character has 18/00 strength.

Also please play One Late Night ;)

Well then maybe you shouldn't call me a casual gamer for not liking the sanity mechanic? Perhaps?

And I agree with a lot of what you're saying, especially when this is such a recent series so there isn't a long gap like with Fallout that makes drastic changes more understandable. It seems like a shitty way to treat the fans who made the original game a success.

Still... I didn't like the sanity mechanic or the light going out mechanic. It made me very stressed while playing, which is not why I play games. So removing those makes me more interested in playing it. You can judge or hate me for that as much as you want, like I scoff at people who whined about getting lost in Morrowind and making me deal with quest arrows, but I'm not going to lie about what I don't enjoy.
Not trying to hijack the thread, bu not got a reply elsewhere.

Concerning the current pick five promo......Amnesia or Penumbra for the money..thanks in advance
Whether it is good or not people would have complained a lot if there wasn't a GOG release.

Amnesia is the better game, I think that's a universal opinion pretty much, but the three Penumbras together are probably significantly longer.

Thanks for the input StingingVelvet
I thought the sanity mechanic was pretty badly handled in Amnesia--less scary then annoying--but I'd have rather they improved it then removed it. Still, A Machine For Pigs hasn't gotten bad reviews so far--although not nearly as good as the original Amnesia--so for now, I'll just wait until I have a chance to play it, and hope that I like it better then Crosmando does.

Game developers make personal calls about games all the time, because that's the frame of reference they have: their own.

Even sequels can't be mirror images of the game that preceded them. They need to change some things.

When they make the right calls, they are hailed as great and at times, visionaries. When they make the wrong call, they are called incompetent/uncaring/selfish/whatever.

Some are better at it than others, but to some extent, it's always a crap shoot. Game making doesn't exist as a science.

Either way, they always try to do the right thing by their customers. Nobody sets their game up to be a failure so give the dog a bone for at least trying.

StingingVelvet: Lack of "sanity" and hunting for matches means I might actually enjoy it, honestly. The original was too tense for me.

More linear sucks though.
This. Exactly this.
When I play a story-driven game, I want the story, not some micro-management.
But the effects of low sanity were fun in the first one, this I must admit :)
