There's always one who tries to make things difficult, and surprise surprise, it's a man ;-)!

You have a point, but I tried to just keep the lists short, and as people use different sub-genres for different games, I thought it best (and easier) to just group them together. I agree it's not the most comprehensive of lists, but it does give a good overview of the genres women gamers like.

If only there were more sports games like Mutant League Football and Hockey. Willing to bet the genre would be held in higher regard then.

You definitely know how to run an enjoyable giveaway and the conversations that have resulted have been interesting to read. Thank you.

There, I corrected that for you :P

My apologies for complicating everything with questions, my teachers felt the same way about me at times. In high school one of them told me that I would have been burnt at the stake in the old days and in college another one used to say "oh, no, it's bad guy!" whenever I sat in his class (which I didn't sing up for but to which I showed up and asked complicated questions) Can't help my inquisitive nature, fortunately I wasn't born in the 17th century so I've somehow survived into adulthood.

awalterj: From this list it's not entirely conclusive where games like The Settlers would fit in, strategy or managerial?
The Settlers don't know themselves where they belong...

I don't like either RTS or managerial games, but DO like The Settlers (1 and 2, that is).

No need to apologise, I was only joking. I enjoy your questions and I understand your point, feel free to ask questions anytime.

As for the burning at the stake part, well that is doable. It's soon to be Guy Fawkes Night here in a England, and it used to be a custom to burn an effigy of a Catholic, but I'm sure we can make room for a question asking Swiss :-). But I think you will be okay, luckily the effigy burning is done vary rarely now, but we kept the bonfires and fireworks.

awalterj: ... - I'm a bit confused because I understand the managerial/sim genre to be a subgenre of strategy games. From this list it's not entirely conclusive where games like The Settlers would fit in, strategy or managerial?
That's the reason I didn't participate in the survey: the established division of videogaming "genres" is so chaotic and unsystematic that serious discussion led usually to confusion, with "RPG" and "strategy" especially mis- and overused. TV Tropes makes from its point of view better work in sorting games by the mechanics than most gaming sites. Space management games as an example:

The results of the giveaway are not that surprising among the GOGers, we are definitely weird bunch. :-)
Thanks ddickinson!

I think the result reflect the GOG catalog, as the site main interest is old games (despite the expansion of its catalog range I believe it still true) and RPG and adventure games are two genres that old games are most likely to grow old and still be good even after 10-20 years, sports games - not so much. That the main reason I think we have so little of them here.

Ha, true that! Some games are really impossible to place into one category, case in point is one of my favorites from the 90s, The Horde. A very original and daring mix between managerial sim and hack & slash, sadly it doesn't have too many votes on the GOG wishlist:

As for the GOG store side of things, I often wonder if a multiple tag system wouldn't be better than the somewhat oversimplified categories that are in place currently but that's probably a discussion for another thread & another day.

There we go again with the implied terror :D
But I should be safe, seeing as I'm a Protestant (more of a borderline nihilistic agnostic really) who just happened to grow up in a Catholic village. The English would just serve me tea and After Eight mints and congratulate me while I shared my experiences of getting kicked out of mandatory Catholic religion class for asking unsavory questions.

Thanks for that interesting link! I would classify XCOm as a "service game" though on that list :)

Agreed about RPG classification being particularly troublesome, most people can't even agree on what Roleplaying really is. In my opinion, hardly any game that brands itself an RPG has anything to do with Roleplaying, at all.
Stats and leveling up/upgrading an RPG not make!

What terror? I made no threats, I just stated the facts :-). But as you're a Protestant, then there's no problem, not that we are prejudice to the Catholics, even back in the day of the Protestant reform, generally the Catholics were not usually singled out too much (definitely not like they did to Protestants). One of the cornerstone rules of the Protestant Church of England was that all Christian religions should be tolerated, they all have the same basic principles after all.

Now, how do you like your tea? But sorry, we're all out of After Eight mints :-).
Congrats to the winners and a belated Happy Birthday to ddickinson! I fear I took the sleepover quite literally and didn't wake up in time ... *rubs eyes* Did I miss something else?

Freshly picked by colonial slaves...I mean: Yes ma'am, some of that Early Grey would be kindly appreciated. No sugar, please.
I can hardly believe you have no After Eight mints :( They're important and mean a lot to me.

Or a cricket bat, that would get rid of the vicious sugar crazed greedy little beggars. And it would mean more brandy beans handy for me :-).
