langurmonkey: If the price of insulin is the torturing and killing of animals, then I choose a world without insulin. And yes, I'd say the same thing living in a world without insulin while dying from diabetes. I'm not willing to violate beautiful life like that just to stay alive just like I wouldn't rape and kill children to preserve my life. There are also many other ways to get data that can help diabetic people with insulin. The torturing and killing of animals is just one option.
I can not think about one single medical breakthrough which is not the result of animal testing at some point or another (and yes, even penicillin... the discovery is one thing, turning it into a medicine is another)
While I do not agree with the other thread, I find it somehow disrespecting towards life and death, I see no ethical reason between rising animals to be used for food or for medical experiments, the bottom line it is both are making use of live animals to ensure human survival.
(Cosmetic trials is something else, as it has nothing to do with survival.)
