I've also worked in customer service and one thing you learn quickly is that people are very often absolute arseholes, very childish and downright evil IF your contact with them is via email, letters, the phone or something similar. Not many of them are very brave if met in person. It takes courage to be that way in person just as it takes a bit of it to criticise someone in person.
So I guess internet reaction, such as towards GOG, reflect that but taken to a much more extreme level.
About thanks I learned a valuable lesson working on customer service. If you want help be nice and informative. Try to be this way in your ordinary life. It makes life MUCH easier.
As a side effect you'll notice you're feeling better yourself. Being grumpy and not very nice literally takes more energy than being at least a little positive. It's tiring physically being negative.
I don't have any stories like the OP but I notice all the time how appreciated it is if I'm being nice. If I make they're day by being polite and nice they make my day a little better by helping me a little better/more/faster or just by the good feeling I get of seeing them appreciate it.
So I guess another Thank GOG is in order. :P
