GameRager: I agree on most of this, but there's a big difference in terms of practicality/application between higher theoretical sciences like black hole theory and science better put to practical use like in the design of computers/etc.
Science doesn't work that way.

Fundamental science tries to understand. This isn't just something to keep us busy or satisfy our curiosity. With understanding comes the ability to predict, manipulate and emulate. Without this understanding, there is no `applied science', since there is no science at all.

GameRager: I agree but i'm guessing black hole theory won't be of much use in our or our's grandchildren's lifetimes.
Nah,understanding how the universe itself works. What use could that ever be? :)

crazy_dave: Well ... except for CERN destroying the Earth :P

as a completely totally unrelated aside :), Hawking Radiation is one of the many, many reasons the nano-black holes created by CERN are benign
Forgot that one....yeah there's that to watch out for....;)

But imo, with or without hawking the nano-scale black holes wouldn't be any less "bening"....he just postulated the theory is all.

You didn't get what I meant.

Basically I meant that one set of current sciences is useful to us practically right now, while the other isn't so much in terms of usability by the common man. Yes black hole physics may become useful at some point, but certainly not for quite some time.

Can it make me a flying car or quantum teleport me a bagel? No, not now?

Point, set, match.

Wow. Are they saying Hawking had anything to do with those moronic 2012 predictions? Anyway, kids have always said or done stupid things, their brains are still developing. Unfortunately, while it used to be that these stupid things would fade into the memories of those few who witnessed them as they get older, today the power of the internet records these statements and actions for posterity to ponder in precise detail. I would hope that this is some poor attempt at "edgy" humor, but I am optimistic.

You were talking about our or our grandchildren's lifetimes, so I don't really see the point of that reply is.

Alternatively, send them on a 'vacation' to P3W-451.
Just want to add something to argument involving GR:

Einstein's theories of relativity gave us gps.
First quantum computers are being made right now (which are shit still) because we smacked atoms at each other at close to light speed velocities.

and you are wrong about the theory of everything.

yes. it would give us flying cars, teleportation, time travel and ftl and other crazy s-f stuff.

for simple reason it would show whether it is possible. and if it is possible it can be made.

Well now I'm going to have to beat you up for sharing that travesty. That almost brought me to tears... of rage.

That's the one with the Black Hole tearing it apart, and a team was lost on it...Jack had to use an explosive charge to close the gate?
Wow. I need to get out more!

Never said science never paid off...just that it takes awhile and right now Hawking's theories aren't really helping the common man that much. They may someday but not now.
"I can develop theories of my own..." - that's the stuff nightmares are made of right there
