Never watched it on cid, thankfully.
I cant imagine a bright blue robin williams more befitting a drug experience though.

Thing is, Aladdin was really meant to be a musical from the start, as opposed to an animated movie with a dance number added. So at least it makes sense.
I was never really a fan of musical numbers in movies. There are a few exceptions, like Ursula's Poor Unfortunate Souls or Christmas Present's song in the Muppet Christmas Carol, but for the most part they're a waste of time and don't really add anything to the films. Even as a child I found them really irritating and often fast-forwarded through them. Thankfully they seem to (mostly) be a thing of the past nowadays.

Gazoinks: It's really mostly a Dreamworks thing because Dreamworks' one formula is smirking pop culture references and that basically fits in there.
The problem is that it isn't only Dreamworks who makes them. Despicable me was made by universal and Star Wars: Detours is Lucas Films. They probably just made a trend.
I actually think that pop culture references can be pretty funny and if they are not the main thing in the movie or in a scene, it's only an ekstra layer, in the silly dancing scenes there are no layers- they are not like onions- it's pure nothing and totally without meaning.
I also see why some people can't stand songs in movies, though I can actually live with them, especially if they are great. (I once had almost a full day of "A whole new world" from Aladin) On the other hand, musical is realy not my thing. Way to often I have had the feeling, that the music was getting in the way of the story and the caracters.

Yeah, more accurately I should've said that it's that kinda Dreamworks style, not that it's only them. (I thought Despicable Me was Dreamwosk, actually). Anyway, I don't mind musicals, but a random dance scene in a non-musical movie is usually annoying, yeah.

That's probably the biggest reason I have little love for Dreamworks's flicks. They have a knack for overdoing it in pretty much all of their films.

The first Shrek was pretty good I think. It was funny even if you didn't know many of the references and they didn't overdo everything. Afterwards it seems they have, sort of "developed" their style for the worse.
