nmorello11: Trying to decide whether or not I want to buy New Vegas. It looks cool and everything, but I've already bought a lot of games throughout the year including a big DND bundle on GOG. I own FO3, but I couldn't get it to run no matter what guide I followed (I have windows 7), and when I played FO3 on my roommate's ps3, I really couldn't get behind it for one reason or another (I only made it into about 3 hours of gameplay). Advice on whether or not I should buy?
see my last few posts as i asked a similar question - maybe something of use

New Vegas Ultimate Edition for 5$ is such a crazy bargain that it makes me cringe that people are even thinking should they or should they not get it.

Also, NW doesn't have the same problems F3 has on W7.

That is pretty much what I was thinking, agonizing over $5 (which is what, the price of a sandwich?) seems a bit much.
The only problem with NV is that the engine is overly sensitive (or crap) and that makes it really hard to tell if it's going to run fine on a certain system or not. I've played through it four times (so yes, it can be fun) and the last two times were very crashy. The fourth time strangely enough only got crashy after about 30 hours of gametime strangely enough.
But still, $5 for an easy 30-60 hours of gameplay?

Profanity: Better in everything except the engine. And I guess exploration, but to be fair, a lot of Fallout 3 exploration was based on going through a whole load of nothing.

Sachys: sounds bit like oblivion in that sense
Exactly, F3 was an Elder Scrolls game in the Fallout universe, NV was a Fallout game made by veterans of the franchise.

GoatBoy: They're really different: Fallout 3 is "choice-driven", meaning that the player is a sort of demiurge of the world of Fallout - what you choose will happen. This is interesting, because you feel powerful, but it has a negative effect on the whole game experience: you'll never be caught off guard, no dramatic turns of events, nothing at all. It is developed by Bethesda, and I think they did a good job in preserving the same feeling of the original games.

New Vegas is a real RPG, developed by Obsidian - with all the pro and the cons of Obsidian games, actually. Obviously, being the original developers of the Fallout series, the adherence to the original concept is even more marked in this game, and the story too is far better. You'll find more bugs, probably, even if I was able to play without problems.
In New Vegas your choices make a real impact on people in the world. You will always fuck someone over and therefore you're gonna be in deep shit with some other factions. You can't have it all in New Vegas, gotta make a decision on who you stick with.

In Fallout 3 the choices still felt... unconsequency in terms of your character. Sure, the world itself may get a change from what you did but the way the world reacts to your character is still the same.

New Vegas had a wonky "good/evil" meter, though. It was too easy to become Jesus.

It's much more about the principle. I've already spent about $80 on games in the past 12 months, which when you buy all of them at 75%+ off, gets you A LOT of games. So it's not so much a financial issue as it is a "how much do I need" issue for me. I just got my paycheck this week, might as well do something with it.
Do you think that the Doom/Heretic+Hexen/Quake/Wolfenstein collections will get a better discount than the laughable 40% off in this sale?

if its not a daily deal / flash sale thingy and its just on a % off until the end of the sale, its best to wait until the last day just in case it does come up on an offer.

Goatbrush: I was considering The Last Remnant but I'm not sure. I've heard mixed things.
I finished playing The Last Remnant for the past few hours now and can say that the game is pretty cool. The protagonist is a bit of a tool, the standard teenage protagonist in these things, but the supporting characters seem more level headed.

The combat is very interesting. It is still the standard form of menu-driven turn-based combat for JRPGs, but they put their twist by instead of controlling individual characters, you control small units. Each character in the unit can act independently though, for example: you can give an order for them to keep their health up, that way assuming that a single healing item is enough, only one of the characters in the unit will use an item while others may still engage in combat. There's the matter of moving around the battlefield, if you attack an enemy unit on one corner another one in the center may attack you triggering a flank attack, which gives a damage bonus. I haven't experimented much with it but it seems that carefully planning your movements in regards to the enemy will be one of the biggest parts of the combat.

A lot of the game's initial poor ratings as I recall came from all its graphical issues on the 360. The biggest problem was the constant stuttering, FPS drops and slowdown, which thankfully seem to be gone here (or at least it was on my PC). Unfortunately the textures still load awfully slow, it is very jarring to every time you walk into a room to have to wait a while for them to pop up. There are some fixes on the ini file that apparently help, I used them but the textures still take a second to load, I'm not sure if the fixes just didn't take or if that is them helping and without it it would be worse.

All in all, I do think it's a good game. If for you it's a matter of whether or not you'll ever get around to playing it, then it's up to you, if it's a matter of price then I can say it is certainly worth the price tag it has now.
for those not sure about getting both fallout 3 and New vegas get them both for $5 each both goty/ultimate editions that much content is worth it.

Also mods makes two pretty good games 10 times better
What about Doom 3 BFG? Is it any good?

I remember people saying it was bad, at least before this version was released. Mind you I've never played the original Doom games, or any of those old FPS's, so I was thinking about making my way back slowly.

Yeah for me it's just justifying the price tag, limited funds and after the most gameplay during the sale. I'm after something I'll play pretty soon. It sounds like this is worth it though from what you said and I checked out a few videos as well.

Thanks for checking it out and taking the time to post your thoughts, it sounds like my kind of thing and I'm sure the texture issue won't bother me that much.
It seems slightly odd that buying all the DLC for Fallout New Vegas costs 5.69, for those who already have the base game, but you can get the entire package for 4.99. There isn't even an option to just buy the ultimate edition for the extra content, if you already have New Vegas. Granted, the difference isn't that much in the end, but it still seems strange to me.
