Then again - the game is mainly focused on competitive online multiplayer, so the fact that you need to log in to battle.net doesn't seem unreasonable.

Yes i would liken battlent to steam.
It does what the third party application hamachi does for no reason other than to maintain control for the company, it is not there because t he consumer desired it nor to enhance the game.

LAN is the silliest thing I've seen people complain about. Most of the people who are complaining just want it there because the first one had it, but honestly, how many of you would be able to use LAN practically in this day and age? Most college friends are probably scattered all over the US of A by now, and the friends that are around may or may not be fans of the series.
If people want to play StarCraft LAN games, then they can whip out the original and have fun times with that.

Lan is important for me in practically every strategy game and hack'n slash rpg. Me and a friend are constantly searching for fun games in those genres to play coop in. :)

yes and guess what unlike some people who may take more shortsighted veiws i actually have real friends that yes i can gather and do in fact gather as often as every 2nd week for a LAN party. The fact of the matter is in australia until the 10 years for a rollout of optical cable places places like my home which happens to be that touch too far from the exchange will have to suffer from people like you in their ignorance undermining the gaming community. Everone got a stable connection oh look you're pings causing you to time out on us again billy, looks like you're gonna have to sit this one out or come over and that's right LAN.
