We come here this day to mourn GSC and the STALKER series, may the PC gaming gods send them to the heavens were Troika and Westwood and Origin are waiting...

lukaszthegreat: is that the chick from Torchwood?

SirPrimalform: Definitely not, looks more like Zooey Deschanel.
lot at your definately. yeah. the eyes are different and the nose is slightly different too but i can't fucking tell them apart.

They said: Get out of here stalker
And he did.
So we weep for all what was lost.
This is very sad of course for us gamers to hear but let's look at the big picture here people

There must be some serious reason as to Why the Publisher of Each Stalker game changed to a different one...
there is a slim ray of hope: from what people have dug up and posted over on GSC's official forum, GSC actually just has a new office that they are moving to and this is just them pulling a GOG to get people's attention.

but that is the GSC forums, so that could just be wishful thinking ... but from what I saw no GSC staff members had posted anything (at all) confirming or denying the company's closure.

the fact that no one who actually works (or worked) there has said shit (at all) makes me suspicious ... either this actually is a RP stunt, or they all went out and got so utterly shitfaced that none of them can type.
I find it pretty annoying that a lot of idiots are acting like this can all be blamed on the "small PC market and piracy." As linked above by awesome folks, these games sold like gangbusters for a relatively small team in Ukraine. There is no reason to close the studio based on their previous sales. Something weird happened... I have read hints toward legal issues.

In any case I loved SoC. I bought the two pseudo-expansions, but have not played them yet. I guess I have that to look forward to now, since there is no sequel coming. Bummer.

CoP is the best one, IMO. It's not as difficult as the others, but it's...well, it's just its own beast. Very unique and memorable.

Yeah, everyone tells me to skip CS and go right to CoP. I might just do that, considering how many times I have heard it.

CS really isn't bad. It still has some really awesome moments (the Red Forest comes to mind). It's the weakest in the series, but it's still most certainly worth a play.

Does it matter story-wise if I play CoP and then maybe CS later on?

It's kind of a moot point for now though, I won't be playing any modern games all next year and I don't have time to start a STALKER before I leave.
Confirmed.

Never liked bugged like hell stalker game's so i don't see any loss in this.
I am so sad. STALKER games are in my top 10 favourite games. :(

Lost Alpha is our last chance :(
Sad :/ Stalker Call of Prypiat was in my top 3 games, and SoC in my top 10.

Who's getting the rights to the games by the way? Ok, that was too soon. (wouldn't it be great if they opened the code for the Xrayengine? Ok, ok, I shut up). To be honest, I'm not that sad because the news on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 were pretty negative (console version, DRM), but COP was one of my greatest experiences as a open world loving gamer. I hope someone follows its path.

EDIT: Now seriously and for the shake of discussion: Galenkin blames the cost of developing a PC only shooter for a European audience, and a failed console publishing deal, for the collapse of the developer. According to RPS. Although the translated source from which that comes is impossible to understand.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series has sold over 4 million copies, for a group of ~50 developers in a country like Ukraine (which I assume is cheap to live in) sounds quite good. This news is quite baffling. I really hope something good comes out of this in some way (maybe ex-employees found a new company and we have the Risen of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series? Please dear Monolith, make it happen!).
As said before, financial reasons make no sense. Stalker had a relative small budget. There was nothing in there that makes modern AAA titles abusrdly expensive (Stalker had no prominent voice cast, marketing, ... e.g.).

But Stalker didn't have an easy birth, maybe some of the startup troubles got them in the end.

You have to be a pretty hardcore S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan (you know, the kind that writes all the dots, :P) to play all through CS. It leaves some gameplay elements half-developed, there is very little incentive to backtrack and the last part of the game is batshit difficult. My recommendation is that you play CS first (because it's always better to leave the best part for the end), but stop playing it if you get too frustrated and then play CoP and never look back. There is no real need to get burned by CS.
