First, THANK YOU again for all of those that helped me score manuals yesterday. And for those that accepted game codes, I really hope you enjoy them. Gaming is my life now, and I mean It when I say I hope others enjoy it because there really are some fantastic experiences to be had out there in the gaming world.

I was immediately impressed with Drakensang when I dabbled with it a bit, especially the depth of character and even the depth of gameplay with so many rolls being made for so many interactions in the game world.

IMO in that sense, it's literally one of the best RPG's I've ever played.

But after playing it almost all day today, it does have its warts too.

For me the "controls" are "clunky". Now, it's 100% mouse driven, so how on earth could those controls be clunky. Well, it's hard to explain, but plain old movement in the game world is actually a chore that has rubbed me all day. The controls are like Divine Divinity (IIRC, point to a spot, and they move to it, hold down the right mouse button and rotate the mouse to change the view).

But it just doesn't work well in this game for some reason., for me. When I zoom up and overtop of the characters I keep clicking on "myself" instead of a spot to move, and when I zoom out it feels like I can't see very well.

It's probably my fault but wanted to share these thoughts and see if others had any similar or opposite reactions to the game. I still think underneath those "clunky controls" this is one hell of a game, so I don't want to miss it if I can help it. FOr the last couple of hours I've been using the w key to move forward and then just "steering" them by holding down the right mouse button and rotating the mouse. This feels a little smoother, but still feels like more of fight then it should be.

So, what are some of your thoughts?? Would it be worthwhile to program my controller for this game? I'm not even sure I would know how to do that, but I may figure it out. As I said, the game itself, and the story so far, give me the impression this game is worth the extra effort. What say you?
Hey, OFG, I also bought the game (although it was some time ago when I got it on sale), but only dabbled with it for an hour or so. But I can easily agree with you from that short interaction as far as the controls go. Still, it looks like a great game and usually gets high praise for its game mechanics from those familiar with the PnP rule set upon which it's based. At some point I'm going to get into the thing and play through it but I keep getting side tracked with other games in my back catalog.
I've had it for quite awhile but never got around to playing it, glad to hear its that good :)
I especially liked the way Drakensang helped alleviate the issues of sexism in RPGs.

By embracing them fully :-P
The controls are awkward and the zoom level either ends up being too close or changing during fights or movement yet I can't help but enjoy it
It is very in depth and has great mechanics and the wound system makes combat more tense because you have to look at both health and number of wounds
lol, yeah, there is that....

what was worse in the pictured case was the conversation between two drunk men sitting nearby. :-P

Yeah, I liked that too.

And one can even suffer in game consequence for smelling bad, something I don't recall ever seeing in a game before. As I said above, it's amazing how in-depth the system is. Your character can learn so many things in so many combinations that I could spend hours just building character if I had a zillion points to spend.

For those unfamiliar, don't worry about the BO problem, as many friendly merchants sell soap to alleviate the problem. :D

I loove the game. I tried the demo a while ago and didn't like it because yes, I thought it was clunky and I didn't try very hard.

Months later I decided to buy it anyway and I thought, "What was the problem here?"

For me, anyway, after a slight bit of getting used to it, it was perfectly fine.

I felt the same way initially with Bloodlines.
i had multiple problems with the forced localization that ended up with me giving up. I might pick it up again sometimes though.
I just started playing it a few days ago and found the constant clicking to move annoying recently I started using the WASD keys to move with the mouse to steer and find that works much better for me
Man I should play this, I had the collectors editions for ages, but instead I just keep playing the old DSA,Blade of Destiny.

Just a word of warning regarding Phileasson's Secret. I know you are on the first game, but if you are going to do River of Time next you should know this.

There is an expansion called Phileasson's Secret for River of Time, but unlike most 'normal' expansions it do not add material to expand the game when it has ended. It adds some more quests in the middle. Therefore it is only a point to add the expansion before you play River of Time the first time, it is pointless to add it after you have completed it.

If you do, it is a nice addition which is well integrated. If you do not, then it is best to forget that it exists.

I got really interested in this game! But when I'm searching for it I get mostly hits for Drakensang: Online. Which game of the series are you playing? Where to get my hands on it?

Thanks!
Probably the most low-key story in a fantasy RPG ever, I mean has their ever been a more non-epic plot in an RPG than Drakensang?
You can use arrow keys to move, actually, but since I'm right-handed I don't like doing that - I don't have enough room to slide my keyboard over to the left to comfortably use my left hand.

You can get the first game on Steam - http://store.steampowered.com/app/12640/, and Gamers Gate - http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-DRAKEN/the-dark-eye-drakensang.

Being in Europe, River of Time is a bit more difficult, due to some botched licensing deals.

There is a Drakensang Complete, you can get it from Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Drakensang-Complete-River-Phileassons-Secret-Pc/dp/B005OGYVKU

and Gamers Gate sells it - http://www.gamersgate.com/DDB-DRAKCP/drakensang-complete-saga-bundle, but not in Europe. (it is possible to get it via a proxy, or getting a US friend to gift it to you)

edit: Funnily enough, you can not buy River of Time on EU Gamers Gate, but you can buy the expansion which requires it.
