HereForTheBeer: If they're getting your higher experience at the legal minimum wage, then maybe this isn't what you think it is. I mean, if they can have your cake and pay cracker prices for it, why would they ditch that?
So maybe they are trying to come up with something more suited to your experience and skill. If there are other departments that could benefit from your skills, you could try shopping around for other positions within the same company.
Last, if you think you may actually be getting fired, then there doesn't seem to be much to lose by asking about their plans for you - in as positive a way as possible. At the very least, it would let you know what is actually going on.
