hedwards: There shouldn't be any compromising on some issues. I personally won't be happy with any compromise that doesn't involve racists and other types of bigots packing it in and giving up. Racism, sexism and such exist purely because good men and women allow it to exist. The more people of various types and colors decry it the harder it is for those hardcore bigots to make progress spreading their hateful beliefs.

MobiusArcher: I just threw that one in as the lead in to that joke. The compromise in question was one of those agree to disagree type of deals. I was just putting that in as I feel further debate wouldn't really accomplish anything else here.
I know and I also know that nobody is likely to change their minds. I just think it's worth remembering that sometimes compromise is just as evil as the evil side of the argument.
I may crack the racist joke from time to time, but even I agree true racism needs to go. It serves to do nothing but divide.

hedwards: It has nothing to do with white liberals and the black community. That racism is very real whether or not you notice it. The point is that questions like that are placed there with the intention of social control.
I don't think ddmuse was trying to say real racism doesn't exist, but was pointing out that sometimes some people use racism as a stepping stone/platform for personal gain over whatever issues they can find, even frivolous ones(like the RE5 example)....in order to gain followers/support/etc.

orcishgamer: You realize there's a lot of people in the US intent on doing real and actual harm to others and one of the things they do is proselytize their racist views, right? We have a pretty serious bigotry problem here, there are people who really did wish the South won, don't think anyone with the wrong color skin is human, with the KKK still lynched people, etc. And they spend a lot of time promoting their views to others. You can split hairs all you want about where the line lies with "actual harm" but that shit simply doesn't belong in school.

I've seen a lot of math questions over the years and never have I seen one with such poor taste.
And that's completely normal for just about any nation.

There's people in italy that think south italians are some sort of sub-human leeches, and other that think mussolini was a pretty swell guy. Extremists exists in every nation.

Yes some of them even end up in the goverment's education system

And i still don't get how these questions are racist, they're just as racist as asking a child how much money Amherst made out of selling contaminated blankets to indians. in fact it's the opposite of racist, it makes the child think that those actions are wrong.

Oh and the next one that tells me i couldn't understand it because i'm not american i have this to say: I see, it's because i'm european isn't it, you racist bastard!

WBGhiro: it's because i'm european isn't it, you racist bastard!
Won't it be a "nationalist bastard" then?
Hm......Three big problems on these question:
1, There is absolutely no necessity of mentioning slavery in those math problems.
2, It is way too early for a Gr.3 kid to really study about slavery.
3, Slavery is not an appropriate topic for math and science question. It should only go into social or history text.

GameRager: there's nothing wrong with asking kids about how many beatings someone got as a math question? :\
Yup, nothing wrong with that.
avatar
kmonster: So which permanent harm has be done to the children ?
They have been brainwashed into becoming slave masters.

Because you aren't a black person. Only black people have the gentle, emotional brain that gets hurt with the little bit of bad wording. Please, oh, please, spare the black people because they are so gentle and consider everything to be racial against them.

After skimming this topic I'm kind of amused at the varying reactions, it shows the various ways that nationalities view the topic of slavery and of racism and racial sensitivity.

As for the questions, they're poorly written and it seems non-sense to attempt to cross questions of mathematics and history. Mathematics teaches to view anything neutrally and analytically, something which history attempts (but often fails).

To me, this is a situation of the media being the media, taking any topic that will generate buzz and going with it, despite the absolute lack of content and lack of importance of the thing.

That happens infrequently enough that it's not even worth mentioning other than to respond to actual cases. As a general rule people that bring that up are using it as a way of rationalizing their lack of integrity.

It's just not germane to the topic of conversation when there's clearly racism going on. At best it's a distraction from the real issue at hand.

Oh, please, like Greeks are any better in that regards.

Do you have any idea how incredibly racist your post is? It's not just blacks that react that way, it's damn near everybody, it's just that blacks get exposed to a lot more of that crap that most other groups do.

That part of my post was a response to GR's question about why racism seems to persist as a national issue. But of course you ignore the part of my post pertaining to the issue itself and seize on an attempt to discredit the conservative viewpoint.

Your insinutation that I am a racist without integrity is pathetic. I chose to ignore your first response to my post because you are a radical liberal with whom I see little benefit in interacting. I expected you to resort such mud-flinging: Whenever a liberal view is challenged by a conservative or libertarian view, the liberal attempts to discredit opposing ideas with what amounts to ad-hominem attacks.

If you question whether affirmative action is just, the liberal loudly decries you as a racist. Question welfare, the liberal wails that you don't care about the poor. Question abortion, the liberal screams that you are a misogynist.

This also happens with neo-conservatives: Question military action in the Middle East, and the neo-con insinuates that you are a terrorist sympathizer or unpatriotic. Question military and financial support of Israel, and the neo-con rages that you are anti-semitic.

For a supposed genius, hedwards, you resort to the most common and desperate means of defense of your viewpoints. I have nothing further to say to you and no desire to waste my time engaging your arrogant views.

I don't know how common your extremists are but ours are common enough in some areas to still pack juries and cause other problems.

1. It shouldn't be though.....

2. Teaching certain things like this have a place though, which is in SS/history class, not math class. And when taught without the proper context or by bad-minded people children are as likely to think the actions are right as to think they are wrong.

3. Sadly though this is a joke it can be true in some cases. You need to have lived a certain way or in a certain area and been exposed to how a community treats a certain issue over time to really "get" the level to which some things are tolerated/disliked in that area.(Not to say one from another country can't get HOW that country feels on a subject.....as they can sometimes. In most cases it seems near impossible for those from other countries/continents to gauge the LEVEL to which that action/thing is liked or disliked by the other nation without having lived in their shoes, so to speak.

Agreed 100% for 1 &3, and mostly for number 2.

1. Oh it happens more than you think in this country.....minority "leaders" like to pull the racism card at the drop of a hat it seems, and the media is right there for them to get their 15+ minutes of fame as they decry anything and everything to be racism just to get community support. I'm looking at YOU Al Sharpton, Jess Jackson, etc......and also whites on the opposite side of the fence like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.

Those chaps often use race to gain views on the most innocuous of issues, and even issues where the accusations might be totally unfounded....usually concentrating on supposed "slurs" against their race while ignoring those made by their race against others. If they want to truly fight racism they should drop the sensationalism and fight against ALL types of racism(black vs white & vice versa), not just that which will get them ratings and followers.

And no, not everyone that brings up those abusing the race card "system" are lacking integrity. Some are, but to say ALL are is a gross generalization. And it IS appropriate to the subject at hand when people use it regardless of how it will impact and divide the community(rich vs poor, conservative vs liberal, black vs white), as in many cases it just irritates the situation without solving much and causes infighting where there was none before. If we didn't have people using racism as a platform for power and influence(in media and politics) then maybe we could tackle the real issues and come together as a species just that much easier.

(This isn't to say that some politicians and media types don't tackle and handle the issue of race for good reason or to do good....some do, but many don't.)
------------------------------------------
I think that bit about everyone feeling that way is what he was trying to point out.....he used the term black person but he could've used any other minority and it would've still worked I think.

While his post was a bit insensitive & it could have been worded better it did illustrate the point very well though about the double standard of how racism can be handled in america........ex: Black beats up white & it's a normal crime usually with not much outcry about any possible racial implications from most people beyond conservatives/etc......but white guy beats up black guy and suddenly it's a "hate crime" and anyone and everyone(including the ones I mentioned above) is calling it a tragedy and bemoaning how it could happen in today's society.

Ask yourself to who exactly this posts feels racist.

It is not only in America. The same goes for gypsies here, even though many of them just leech on our (and other countries') social system. And if you dare to say something about it, you get marked as a racist. Even when they run to other country (GB, Denmark, I think even Belgium too) to leech some more, they cry about how they are oppressed here and EU slaps us for being racist. Double standards indeed.
