Oh sweet god. I'm officially moving my desk up a couple feet and standing while I work and play games on my PC.

I didn't know sitting at 135 degrees would be a good idea. Been doing that for ages!
Everything kills you. I'd suggest just doing what's comfortable for you. I decided 'fuck it' when I heard that you have to sleep exactly 7 hours. Less than that, an you have a higher chance of heart failure. More than that, you have a higher chance of just dropping dead.
How do I link properly?

I could never link on this forum correctly. :(

And I agree with what doccarnby said. It's like really? Damn.
I always "love" stuff like this that goes "this and this is not enough, you have to do that and that!" when, if you were to combine all these tips, you'd basically spend your entire day making an effort to live the way you're "supposed" to without having a, you know, LIFE!

It's bullshit in that sense. We're not supposed to eat tinned meat, we're supposed to cook proper food (which takes a few hours every day), we're supposed to properly shave, wash, etc. ourselves, we have to chew every bite of food X times, we're supposed to wash our hands after every little thing, we're supposed to do all sorts of different activities to keep our body healthy, we're supposed to find some time to mentally relax and wind down to avoid stress, we're supposed, we're supposed, we're supposed .... of f**k off already. If I die at the age of 55 and I did it while having fun, I'll consider it a good life. If I'm to be a little whipped health freak like people who actually do the above, I'd have had a pathetic life.

Get this: hunters hunted not just for food but because it gave them satisfaction and status. Standing up and walking up and down stairs isn't going to be doing the same damn thing. Life no longer works like that - and we can't all become professional buff athletes or we'd all starve to death. Reality is that we NEED people who sit down all day and those who do manual labour don't get anywhere near the same respect as the hunters of old did. Most people who are respected these days, except for atlhetes, aren't those who work out a lot, but the thinkers, the smart ones, the talented ones (actors, comedians, etc.) so that's the way things have become. You can maybe use some of your time to stay fit, but to go beyond that and spend 4+ hours a day standing up while working on your PC? That's insane.
This keeps getting backed up by study after study, exercise and diet will not help you if you sit 6 or more hours per day, you will fall into the group with a higher/earlier mortality and that's that. Roll the dice against worse odds or get an active job. Still, even if you are going to be in this higher mortality rate category, exercise will still improve your life, just not move you out of this group, so still exercise and eat right.

If you've got a straight up URL like yours, you should be able to just post it as is and the forum software will make it a link for you.

If you want to turn text into a link, just highlight the text to be linked, click the link button in the post editor (look like a couple of chain links), then paste your actual URL into the space between the "" before the text you are turning into a link:

"Sitting makes us fat" - that's BS and I would know.
Protip: sitting can't make you fat if you don't eat.

One clarification: when you are creating a link from text in a post, hitting the link button will populate the space that needs to be occupied by the actual URL with a copy of the text you are linking. You will need to replace that copy with the URL, but leave the original text as is:

When you click the button {url=linked text}linked text{/url}
What it should look like: {url=http://www.whatever.com/page}linked text{/url}

Ive been hearing a lot about this. It has nothing to do with being fat. That part of your link is bogus. One expert on National Public Radio suggested sitting on a exercise ball. Your siting, but you constantly have to move around. So now Ive been playing console games (and PC games with gamepad support) while sitting on an exercise ball.
So the fact that I am seated the entire day in my line of work and don't deliberately exercise explains why I am obese and have all these health problems...

...oh wait. I'm skinny. Perhaps even unusually so for my age group (I can still fit clothes I wore as a teenager with room to grow). The closest I have to a health problem is minor asthma. I have low blood pressure, and last year I was told I have a strong heart and sound lungs. How can I get away with my sedentary lifestyle?

Maybe it's because I don't have a bag of Cheetos on hand the whole day...
Well, I would imagine it's not quite so bad as they make out.

After all, life expectancy is ever increasing (on average) despite the increased amounts of sedentary lifestyle.

I'd also suspect the data to be rather difficult to collect accurately, given that most people don't sit in one place for long periods (people may shift about, or stand every now and then, and then you have those with restless legs...)

I also wonder what their idealised hunter-gatherer person would actually consider a good life expectancy, in a world where death and disease would be far more prevalent.

The obesity increase from 1980 to 2000 has been linked to all sorts of things, not least the availability of cheap, high energy foodstuffs.

Basically, it's always going to be more complicated than a single-issue study will show, but the general theme (that you shouldn't spend all your day sitting down) is a good one, even if for some people it's difficult to avoid (all of those in office jobs for a start).
