drmlessgames: Steam adds a ton of overhead to my bandwidth, which isnt that good to start with. That without counting the 10+ gigs it has to download per game average nowadays. I'll skip this. If they want a digital always-ready download, why don't they just offer a sort of official torrent download that you have to activate with a retail key?
avatar
AndrewC: You know you can just buy it retail and install it from disc like The Orange Box for example; this means that it will be activated on your Steam account but you will use the physical media to install so no download needed except for patches.
I'm actually really happy that it will be on Steam. Most of my games are there, most of the people I play with are there and if they will integrate match-making with the Friends List then it's even better.

Well, not necessarily. It depends on how well the devs/publishers support the Steam version.
Some publishers/devs don't really care, and the "patches" are just a case of redownloading the entire game.
That being said, Steamworks would suggest that the patches will actually be patches, and not redownloads. But if bandwidth is an issue, you might want to wait a few weeks to see how they get handled.

I suppose, but that defeats the entire point of digital games. So it's either their crappy bandwidth killing download service, or brick and mortar. Why can't they just bring about the already available downloading methods like torrents and such, which are much more reliable than theirs I may add. I myself am not in the usa, i would have to order the 50$ boxed game and pay S&H. And wait about 3-4 weeks before it arrives.

lackoo1111: too bad lots of "casual gamers" ( you know what i mean ) will buy it on Steam

Hah! Indeed =)
That's rather unfortunate. If this news remains true when the game is released then I guess I'll be passing on it and sticking with Civ 4.
So is Valve now the QA and technical support of every major game company now? When are they going to have time to work on their own games ?? ; )

Not sure if I care for this or not ... but at least it is not GFWL and its unclear number of activations and other annoyances.

Even if they released it as a torrent, there's no promise that their patch would literally be a patch and not some large redownload of game resources. It's really up to the developer to make sure patches aren't problematic.

Well we cannot be sure about it at this point. It might need Steam and GFWL at the same time.
speaking about redownloading a game.
CoD MW 2
SupCom 2
anyone had to redownload these, even if he owns the retail copy ?
Not only will the game support many Steamworks features but there will also be a digital deluxe version of the game via Steam. That version, which costs $59.99, will add the Babylonia civilization to the game along with a behind-the-scenes video feature and the game's soundtrack.
Both the regular and digital deluxe edition will be eligible to get an extra Mesopotamia map pack if players pre-order the game via Steam.

that's 59.99€
nice move Gabe

So does this mean that someone without a Steam account cannot play the game?

Releasing as torrents has hell of a lot of issues regarding authentication and verifying that the person downloading is indeed the owner of said files.
As for crappy bandwidth killing download service, I think you need to talk to your ISP ;)

What the heck has that to do with Gabe? And I again don't see the problem here: you want to play with the babylonians, then buy that extended version (think of it as a collectors edition). The whole 2 versions of the game comes from the devs and not Valve.

Yeah but downloading the torrent is useless unless you have a legal key or you are a cracker.
