tfishell: I heard it was hyper-violent, very physically disturbing
It was and that's actually one of the reasons I liked it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a sadist, but most movies about the crucifixion are a tad glamorous for my take, with sun beams falling on Christ's head, and trumpets blaring, and the thump thump thump of of the kettle drums, and Jesus looking remarkably clean for someone who has just been beaten sensless, dragged up a hill, and nailed to a cross. Then of course the bold speeches by all three of the condemned. Someone who is being crucified can barely breath much less orate to a huge crowd of onlookers outside with no acoustics. To Mel's credit he got rid of a lot of this showman ship and made it more brutal but also no doubt a little more realistic in terms of look.
